Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett (Playwrights) began their enormously successful and remarkably prolific collaboration in 1928, a partnership that lasted 34 years. The privileged daughter of well-to-do parents, Frances Goodrich attended Vassar before beginning her career as an actress, first appearing on Broadway in 1916. By the time she met fellow actor Albert Hackett in the late 1920s she had already been divorced twice. Nine years the junior of his wife, Albert Hackett was the son of stage star Florence Hackett and brother of matinee idol Raymond Hackett. The Manhattan-born Albert first appeared onstage at the age of six to help earn money for his family after the death of his father. He eventually went on to study at New York’s Professional Children’s School. Like Goodrich, Hackett met with modest success as an actor, and their initial collaboration arose as a result of their mutual desire to leave acting in favor of playwriting. The two were married while collaborating on their first Broadway hit, Up Pops the Devil. Their success on Broadway eventually led to the pair being signed as a writing team by MGM, where they launched the popular Thin Man series. While there would be another Broadway production on the Goodrich/Hackett docket in the 1940s, The Great Big Doorstep, for the most part the couple devoted their time to screen writing. They were particularly THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK PROGRAM THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK PROFILES skilled at adapting the works of others to meet the restrictions and requirements of the movies. Among their most famous film credits were adaptations of Owen Wister’s The Virginian, S.N. Behman’s The Pirate, Edward Streeter’s Father of the Bride, and the musical version of Stephen Vincent Benet’s Sobbin' Women, released as Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Goodrich and Hackett were also among the many writers who toiled on Frank Capra’s It's a Wonderful Life. Writing the stage version of The Diary of Anne Frank was the achievement of which both Goodrich and Hackett were most proud. The job of adapting the diary had originally been offered to Lillian Hellman, who turned it down, saying that if she wrote the play “It would run one night because it would be deeply depressing.” She, in turn, recommended Goodrich and Hackett because they possessed a “lighter touch.” It took the couple two years and eight rewrites before they came up with a draft which pleased Otto Frank, Anne’s father. The original Broadway production received the 1956 Tony Award for Best Play, and the script received the 1956 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Goodrich and Hackett also adapted the play for the screen in 1959. Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett remained married until her death in 1984. Albert Hackett passed away in 1995. Wendy Kesselman (Adaptor) received a Tony Award nomination for her adaptation of The Diary of Anne Frank, which was produced on Broadway. Her plays include My Sister in this House; The Notebook; The Last Bridge; I Love You, I Love You Not; The Executioner’s Daughter; The Juniper Tree, A Tragic Household Tale; Maggie Magalita; Merry-Go-Round; Becca, A Musical; a musical adaptation of Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities; and a musical adaptation of Chekhov’s The Black Monk. A member of the Dramatists Guild, she is the recipient of the New England Theatre Conference Major Award for outstanding creative achievement in the American theatre, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, the first annual Playbill Award, the Roger L. Stevens Award, the Jane Chambers Playwriting Award, the Lecomte du Noüy Annual Award, and a Guggenheim, McKnight, and two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships. She is also a seven-time winner of the ASCAP Popular Award in Musical Theatre. Ms. Kesselman’s screenplays include Sister My Sister (adapted from My Sister in the House), directed by Nancy Meckler; I Love You, I Love You Not (adapted from her play of the same name), directed by Billy Hopkins; and Mad or in Love for Fox 2000. Central to this mission are three important core values: valuing text, both classic and contemporary, as the fundamental source of inspiration; creating deliberately intimate performances where audiences are face-to-face with powerful stories; and honoring the time and commitment of our artists by remaining at the forefront of industry compensation. With a reputation for consistent artistic excellence, innovative educational programming and strong ties to our community, Writers Theatre has built an award-winning repertoire and today, serves as a vital and highly-regarded company in the Chicago theatre community. WRITERS THEATRE HISTORY In 1992, Writers Theatre was founded in order to create an environment where the written word and the nurturing of artists were the foundation of all productions. We opened our first venue that year in the anteroom of a newly opened bookstore in Glencoe on the North Shore of Chicago. The limited space available gave way to a new aesthetic that has been a company hallmark ever since—intimacy. Under the artistic leadership of Founding Artistic Director Michael Halberstam, who continues in that role to this day, Writers became a welcome addition to the already vibrant Chicago arts community. The Theatre quickly garnered significant critical acclaim and established a reputation as a home for world-class art and artists, opening a second performance space in 2003. Our inviting 108-seat Tudor Court space continued the company’s trademark level of intimacy while allowing for a new scale of production and affording the opportunity to expand audiences, programming and educational outreach. Acclaimed by The Wall Street Journal as one of the top half-dozen regional theatres in the country, Writers has offered more than 90 productions, including 16 world premieres. We have garnered numerous awards and accolades, including 110 Joseph Jefferson Award nominations and 25 Awards, as well as multiple citations of Artistic Director Michael Halberstam for excellence and contributions to the field, including The 2010 Zelda Fichandler Award and the 2013 "Chicagoan of the Year in Theater" Award from the Chicago Tribune. In 2007, Writers debuted nationally with a New York premiere of Crime and Punishment, followed in 2011 by a Lincoln Center Theater production of A Minister’s Wife—the musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw’s Candida, conceived and directed by Halberstam. In November 2013, Writers Theatre announced the launch of the On to a New Stage Campaign, a $34 million fundraising effort, which includes a cash reserve. This campaign will establish the company's first permanent home in a new theatre center in downtown Glencoe, designed by the award-winning, internationally renowned Studio Gang Architects led by Founder and Design Principal Jeanne Gang, FAIA. This will allow the Theatre to continue to grow to accommodate our audience, while maintaining our trademark intimacy. The new facility will resonate with and complement the Theatre’s neighboring Glencoe community, adding tremendous value to Chicagoland and helping establish the North Shore as a premier cultural destination. THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK PROGRAM ABOUT THE WOMAN'S LIBRARY CLUB OF GLENCOE The still active Woman's Library Club was incorporated on April 18, 1872. WLC was the third women's club organized in Illinois for social and intellectual improvement. The club formed the nucleus of a library for Glencoe. Its first building was used as such until the Glencoe Public Library was built, hence the name. The members meet monthly to pursue The Club's philanthropic, intellectual and social purposes. The club recently opened The North Shore Exchange (an upscale consignment shop). This 501(c)(3) shop is a charitable arm of WLC and is located at 372 Hazel Avenue in Glencoe, 847-835-0026. Membership is open to all. For information about the club, please leave a message on the 847-835-4199 line. BOARD OF TRUSTEES President, Christopher S. Pfaff Vice Presidents, Gillian Goodman, Beth L.
