Setting
Throughout the play the stage is divided into sections:
At the foot of the stage lies an abandoned dinner table set for Passover Seder
Stage Left - PATTY’s hospital room in a New York City ICU
Stage Right – The Berkshires – as patty imagines it in her mind
A note about PATTY: She will be referred to as PATTY when in coma and PATRICIA when in
flashbacks as her former self
Time Period: From April 2004 through April 2006, with flashbacks throughout. Characters
easily pass in and out of past and present, until pre-coma and post-coma lives finally converge.
•! Between the first and second act, BLAINE plays piano throughout.
•! Between the second and third act, PHIL strums guitar throughout.
•! Acts One and Two can be combined for a two-act play.
Lighting
Berkshires is represented by a warm, open light.
Hospital room is represented by a sterile, bright white light
Lighting is shifted as PATTY and PATRICIA “paint” with their arms
Act 1: The Shattering
Act 2: The Awakening
Act 3: The Re-membering
Since this is a conceptual piece, attempting
to simulate life waking up from a coma, the
protagonist's journey back to herself is
guided through layers of music, movement
and lighting in order to create a tapestry of
past and present. In the next stage of
development, I hope to integrate dance, art,
music, perhaps film and other media to
create a soupy memory collage, as the
protagonist re-members what she thought a
coma had permanently repressed - she is
literally re-"membering" the former
"members" of her life in order to heal.
The set is minimal. The passage of time
should be fluid, made possible by gradual,
subtle shifts in light, music and movement.
Pat’s family is looking forward with anxiety; looking backwards in regret, and presently frozen
in shock and denial.
