RACE
-scholars have created Caucasoid, mongoloids and negroids as
3 categories
-problems include: Indians, Ainu, and Aborigine
-For these reasons, Race is of little concern.
-rather, Sociologists focus on the reactions from one perceived
group to another
ETHNICITY
-Set of cultural characteristics distinguishing one group from
another
-for this reason, the melting pot of the US is full of ethnic
groups
-strong and weak groups
-strong=Asians, Hispanics
-weak=Irish, German
-*-One problem this creates is a lack of a National Ethnic Group.
-this allows for infighting and power struggles as few
Americans identify as being “American.” At least until they
themselves are labeled a “minority group.”
-However, the rest of the world recognizes us as
American=American Ethnic Group
-One of our problems, and sociologists have created this, is the
label of “Minority Group.”
-Dominant vs Minority
*-physical characteristics or cultural practices create a minority
group
-minority groups are discriminated against.
CHARACTERISTICS
