4th Grade “I Can Statements”
Unit 1 Heat, Electricity and Magnetism
Forms of Energy
I can identify heat as a form of energy.
I can identify electricity as a form of energy.
Energy and Temperature
I can find (determine) the temperature of a substance in degrees Celsius (and Fahrenheit)
by using a thermometer.
I can demonstrate how the temperature of a substance increases when heat energy is
added.
I can describe how heat energy is produced when a substance burns.
I can describe how heat is produced by friction.
I can describe how heat is produced by electric current flowing through materials.
Electric Circuits
I can describe the components of a complete circuit.(power source, conductor, bulb, motor
or appliance)
I can describe how energy is transferred in an electrical circuit.
I can describe how energy is changed in an electrical circuit.
I can demonstrate how electric current creates a magnetic field using an electromagnet.
Properties of Matter
I can identify good conductors of electricity.
I can identify poor conductors of electricity.
I can identify good conductors of heat.
I can identify poor conductors of heat.
Magnets
I can demonstrate the shape of a magnetic field using iron filings and a magnet.
I can demonstrate how a stronger magnet can attract more magnetic objects.
I can demonstrate that the distance from a magnet can affect the strength of attraction.
Unit 2 Matter
Measurement of Physical Properties
I can identify the difference between weight and mass.
I can measure the weight of an object in grams or kilograms using a spring scale.
I can measure the mass of an object in grams or kilograms using a balance.
I can measure the volume of a liquid in milliliters and liters using a graduated cylinder and a
measuring cup.
States of Matter/Changes in Matter
I can identify the difference between a solid, liquid, and gas.Perhaps this statement should
include adding properties of these such as definite shape, shape of container, volume, etc.
I can describe how heating can change a solid to a liquid.
I can describe how heating can change a liquid to a gas.
I can describe how cooling can change a gas to a liquid.
I can describe how cooling can change a liquid to a solid.
Unit 3 Relationships of Living Things
Life Requirements
I can identify what a plant needs for growth and repair
Determine is the verb used in clarification…determine would be looking at a plant or animal
and deciding what they are missing to survive
I can identify what an animal needs for growth and repair.
Survival
I can identify differences in organisms of the same species.
I can identify different characteristics of plants that help them survive and reproduce.
I can identify different characteristics of animals that help them survive and reproduce.
Interactions
I can identify the source of energy for almost all life on Earth. (sun)
I can identify how all animals depend on plants.
I can identify a consumer.
I can identify a producer.
I can identify a decomposer. (maybe change wording to describing what decomposers
do…describe is not in the clarification)
Changed Environmental Effects
I can explain how changes in the environment can affect the survival of plants and animals.
Fossils
I can explain how fossils provide evidence of change that has occurred on Earth.
I can explain how fossils are samples of plants and animals that existed long ago.
I can compare the similarities between fossils of early life forms and organisms that exist
today.
I can contrast the differences between fossils of early life forms and organisms that exist
today.
Unit 4 – Sun, Moon and Earth
Characteristics of Objects in the sky.
I can identify the moon as the closest object in the sky to the Earth.
I can identify the sun as the closest star to Earth.
I can identify the moon as a natural satellite of Earth.
I can identify the Earth as a natural satellite of the sun.
I can explain why the Earth can support life as we know it, but the moon cannot.
I can compare characteristics of the Earth, sun and moon.
I can contrast characteristics of the Earth, sun and moon.
Patterns of Objects in the Sky
I can describe the orbit of the Earth.
I can describe how the Earth experiences one year.
I can identify how long a year is and why we have leap year.
I can describe the rotation of the Earth in its axis.
I can identify how long a day is on Earth.
I can explain why we experience day and night on Earth.
I can describe the revolution of the moon around the Earth.
I can explain why we see the moon.
I can observe the changes in the moon from day to day.
I can identify the 8 moon phases.
I can describe how the sun appears to move across the sky from east to west every day.
I can describe how the path of the sun changes slowly with the seasons.
I can describe how the moon also appears to move across the sky from east to west on a
daily basis.
