Southern Serengeti
Serengeti National Park
recognized as a World Heritage Site, is one of the most famous wildlife areas in the world and is
considered the world’s oldest protected eco-system. Serengeti National Park, as we know it today,
was gazetted in 1951, but a smaller area first received protection between 1921-29 by the British to
prevent decimation of the lion population from hunting. The park itself is 5,700 square miles, but
the more extensive Serengeti eco-system is over 9,600 square miles of protected land from Ngorongoro all the way to Loliondo and Kenya (the smaller Maasai Mara) and including the Maswa Game
Reserve on the southern boundary of the park. The Serengeti is the largest national park in Tanzania, with a staggering animal population of almost four million and 523 recorded species of birds! It
is the largest wildlife sanctuary in the world and the site of one of the most breathtaking events in
animal kingdom-the migration of more than 1.4 million wildebeest and another 250,000 zebra. The
area consists of treeless plain,s savannah dotted with acacia and granite outcroppings called kopjes,
and riverine bush and forest in the north. The famous “Migration” that people dream to experience
is actually a dynamic process taking a full year to complete. There are different ‘events’ that happen at different times of the year and in different locations in this park. The basic migration occurs
in a clock-wise direction but is guided by rain and the growth of grass, so at any time the animals
can ignore “tradition” and just follow rain clouds in a more haphazard direction.
The southern Serengeti is at its peak between December and May. It is at this time
of the year that the huge wildebeest herds
seek the short-grass plains as they begin to
mass for the wildebeest calving and then
actually drop their calves
sometime between January and early March. The primary
short-grass species that grow in the southern
Serengeti provides ample amounts of nutrients necessary for good lactation. Additionally, the open savannah provides better
sightlines to predators, giving the herds time
to respond to the hunt.
The ability for massive numbers of wildebeest to co-mingle and synchronize the calving provides greater protection against predation, as there is truly safety in numbers at
this vulnerable time. Eighty to ninety percent of calves are born in a 3 to 4 week period of time. The herds continue to populate
this area even as the rut begins and some of
the herd moves to the Moru Kopjes. The
forest area of Ndutu also provides great
elephant encounters, beautiful birding, excellent cat activity and flamingos on Lakes
Ndutu and Masek.

Open Dec 20 - May 31.
Nestled in a pristine area west of Lake Ndutu
where the waters meet the woodland habitat, lies
Woodlands Camp. This site was selected for its
seclusion from the crowds in a location that’s free
from the dust of the Lake Ndutu area. Additionally it is a common route for wildebeests travelling
between the Moru Kopjes and southern plains.
The 9-tented camp offers spacious sleeping quarters, en suite bathrooms with flush toilets as well
as running water and 24 hour electricity. There
are 4 tents with king size beds, 4 tents with twin
beds and 1 family tent that features 2 bedrooms,
one with a king size bed and the other with two
twin beds, making it ideal for two adults and one
to two children. A separate dining tent with a
relaxing lounge and bar area is located in the
center of the camp. Additionally the camp is
staffed with a chef who delights in winning over
your culinary senses with his own famous dishes
and a gracious team devoted to meeting your
every need.
Upon request, the camp can be
booked to include beverages such as
bottled water, soft drinks, juices, tea,
coffee, local beer, house wines and
spirits. Champagne, specialty wines
and spirits are charged directly to
clients.
