LET’S EXPLORE!
• Expedition gear you will need: A piece of notebook

paper (folded into four sections) and the world map
handout. The captain has given you two tasks to
complete as you take your journey!
You will use your world map handout to trace the routes
of the explorers.
Choose a color for each country and color in the key.
On your paper, label each box with the names of
England, France, Portugal, and Spain
CAPTAIN’S ORDERS!
• As you journey through the lesson, copy
the explorer’s route onto your world map
(match the color of the route with the
explorer’s country).
• Record the information about each
explorer onto your paper (include the
name of the explorer).

around the world (even though he died during
the trip). Named the Pacific Ocean

explorations of Bortolomeu Dias, and

He sent Vasco Da Gama to explore the
West Coast of Africa. He was trying to
find a quicker route to Asia. Da Gama
did reach Asia (India)
Dias 1487-1488, da Gama 1497-1498
They sailed near Africa and South America
Asia!!!! Wasn’t that where everyone was
going??

The first European encounter with the
continent of North America since the Norse
Vikings.
1496 and 1497
First expedition he got lost and returned
home. On his second voyage, he landed in
Newfoundland, which is in present
day Canada.
His explorations helped to establish a strong
British hold in North America.

They kept running into LAND!!
EFFECTS OF EXPLORATION ON AFRICA, NORTH, AND
SOUTH AMERICA.
Slavery, spread of disease, wars, clash of cultures,
imperialism, religious conversion, spread of new ideas,
introduction of new foods and products.
WHEN IT WAS ALL DONE…..
•On the back of the route map you just completed,
create a key using a number for each country
(ex.1=Portugal, etc).
•Read the handout titled “The Empires of Portugal,
Spain, England, and France”
•As you read the article, place a the number of the
country in the area they claim (ex. Dias reached the
southern tip of Africa, place a ”1” in South Africa).

claiming it for their empire?
– What may occur when more than one nation
claims an area (a complete sentence)?
– What advantage would a nation have if they
alone claim an area (a complete sentence)?
