World Science Festival Brisbane
A Live Presentation Of 2001: A Space Odyssey
In a Queensland first, the World Science Festival
Brisbane will screen Stanley Kubrick’s seminal
masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey with the
ground-breaking score performed live at
Queensland’s premiere music venue, the Concert
Hall at QPAC. Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey remains
one of the most influential works in cinema history
and consistently ranks among the top ten films of
all time.
A beautiful blend of science and art, known for
its technological realism and creative audacity,
2001: A Space Odyssey is an exploration of
existentialism, human evolution, technology,
artificial intelligence and extra-terrestrial life.
An extraordinary feature at the time of release,
the first and last 20 minutes of the film are dialogue
free and the innovative use of classical music
includes the Gayane Ballet Suite, lso sprach
Zarathustra and, most memorably, the ultimate space
waltz of The Blue Danube, which launched the piece
into contemporary pop-culture history.
Led by internationally-renowned conductor Marc
Taddei, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and
Australian Voices will bring another dimension to the
cult classic with a live performance of Kubrick’s final
score delivered in the rich quality of surround sound,
for three performances only.
Julliard-trained and globally-successful Marc Taddei
has worked with such diverse artists as Dame Kiri Te
Kanawa, Julian Lloyd Webber, James Morrison,

Diana Krall, and Art Garfunkel among many others.

CHRISTIE CINEMA PIPE ORGAN
Affectionately known as “The Christie”,
a 1934-vintage 11 rank cinema pipe organ
manufactured by the British Hill Norman
and Beard Pipe Organ Company (approx.
1000 pipes) brought to Brisbane in 1969 from
the Granada Theatre, Maidstone, England
and now installed in the Kelvin Grove State
College Theatre. These musical giants,
as much orchestra as organ and entirely
mechanical including percussion and a sound
effects suite, roared into picture theatres
across the world. They allowed one skilled
musician to conjure up a symphony of sound
and provide every necessary musical
impression for breathing life into silent films
and the popular music of the day. The
Christie, England’s answer to the marvellous
American Wurlitzer, provided luxurious 1930's
cinemas with their own sophisticated musical
identity after the silent era ended.

Minefields & Miniskirts is a series
of funny, fascinating, sad and
poignant stories of Australian
women who lived in Vietnam
during the war. These women are
now ‘all grown up’ and have
important stories to tell, in many
cases, for the very first time.
Based on the book by Siobhan
McHugh, the play relays “true
stories collected from interviewing
50 women from all sides of the

war – entertainers, nurses,
journalists and those whose
husbands or sons were military
combatants”.
Performed as a series of
monologues, these stories are full
of surprises. The women’s journey
takes them through naivety,
optimism, humour and horror
before ultimately reaching regret,
peace and love.

without judgement and with
such compassion that nothing is
withheld. The result is as shocking

don’t see coming. Finding the
extraordinary in the mundane, the
tragicomedy Stones in His Pockets
is the story of a small Irish town
overrun by the arrival of a
Hollywood film shoot. On screen
romance blossoms between a rich
girl and a local farmer, while offscreen local film extras clash with

the brash Hollywood big shots.
Equal parts deeply moving and
deliciously funny, Stones in His
Pockets sees Grant Cartwright and
Sean Hawkins play 15 characters
between them: an ambitious film
extra, the vacuous Hollywood
starlet, a steam-rolling movie
studio producer, and a desperate
young man caught up in it all.
According to director Chris
Bendall, Stones in His Pockets
zeroes in on the characters we
usually overlook – like a film extra
– to tell the story. “From this
perspective, with comedy and
theatricality, the play highlights
intimate and confronting
narratives that are often left out
of our histories.”

taxidermy specimens including
