Unfortunately, Hades tricked Persephone to eat pomegranate seeds and he then had a claim on her. Eventually, the gods made an agreement. Persephone would spend 4 months in the underworld every year. When she was not in the underworld, she was permitted to be on Earth with her mother. This created the seasons, which were based off of Demeter’s emotions. During the time when Persephone was on Earth, Demeter was happy and brought about spring, summer, and autumn. Her mood changed when Persephone was in the underworld, creating the winter season. HEPHAESTUS VULCAN Domain: God of Fire and Forge Symbol(s): Fire, Axe, Pincers, Hammer Personality of God: He was kind and giving who loved making things for others. But, his weakness was that he was quite jealous and was bitter about how the other gods treated him. His strengths were that he had the ability of creating weapons for the gods. Also, he had a very quirky sense of humor, and was more of a quiet man who liked to stay hidden in the shadows. Myth Summary: Once Hephaestus was born, crippled and hideous, his father felt as if he was unworthy of being able to live on Mount Olympus. Zeus yelled at Hera telling that Hephaestus should be cast away from Mount Olympus. So, Zeus grabbed Hephaestus and flung him off of Mount Olympus, the impact of the fall rendered Hephaestus a lifelong injury in his leg forcing him to wear a golden leg iron. Allusion and Explanation: The allusion is "Vulcan Materials" an asphalt company that makes and distributes concrete. Vulcan is the Roman name for Hephaestus hence why we chose this company as our allusion. The concrete that "Vulcan Materials" makes displays that they create things (in this situation…concrete) like Hephaestus. Also, the distribution of concrete that "Vulcan Materials", symbolizes Hephaestus giving weapons to other gods to perform their duties, like we need concrete to fulfill our duties too. Zeus+Hera Ares Hebe Hephaestus Aphrodite: The Goddess of Beauty, Sexuality and Eternal Youth In Roman Name: Venus The Goddess of Love and Eternal Youth also known as Aphrodite and to the Romans Venus. Her symbols are the girdle, which she used to compel men to fall in love with her, a seashell which she apparently appeared from, and the swan. She is said to be very manipulative, self-centered by has a weak personality. Her spunky personality and vengefulness cause the infamous Trojan War. The three Goddesses, Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite fought over a coveted golden apple, the one who possessed it is known to be the fairest one of all. They decided to let the most handsome man from Troy decide, Paris. While Hera bribed Paris with the power to rule the world, Athena told him that with her help he would be victorious in any battle. Aphrodite however told Paris that he could have the most beautiful women ever, Helen of Troy, and with that the Trojan War was set in motion. In Hesiod’s telling Aphrodite is said to be the daughter of Uranus and Gaea because the Love Goddess was born from the foam of Uranus’ cut off genitals. She came up from the waters and walked upon the shore the most beautiful being ever. Although, Homer states the Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus. Poseidon (Neptune) Poseidon is the god of the sea and one of the greediest gods. He would repeatedly try to expand his underwater palace. He desired more gold, coral and pearls to add to his wealth which was also another reason he was always aggressive. At a time when Athens had its first king, Cecrops, the ruler of Athens, was seeking for a patron deity for his city state. Two of the many gods were especially attracted by his opportunity. They were Poseidon, god of the ocean, and Athena, god of wisdom and skill. When they both revealed themselves to Cecrops, he asked of them to offer a gift of which he would use to decide who should be the patron deity for Athens. Poseidon presented a well which shot out salty water. Athena, on the other hand, planted an olive branch which grew to be an olive tree. It represented peace. Cecrops was easily impressed by Athena and chose her to be the guardian of Athens. Poseidon was not pleased which his decision and cursed the land to be short of water. It is said that the curse lasts to this day. There is a wonderful resort named after the king of the seas. It is called the Poseidon undersea resort. It is the world’s first sea floor resort located in Fiji. Its name refers to the king of the ocean which also demonstrates their quality as they are a five-star resort. Although it is a comfortable resort, it is priced at $30,000 per couple per week. The price tag furthermore describes the wealth Poseidon himself was seeking. Poseidon was the offspring of Cronus and Rhea but he was not the only one. He had five siblings who later “divided the power of the world”. They are known as Zeus, Hades, Hestia, Demeter and Hera. He was considered older than zeus by ancient writers which is the reason he was always bitter towards Zeus for snatching power from him. But in other cases however, he is younger than Zeus. Hestia and The Vestal Virgins Hestia is the goddess of the hearth. The hearth would refer to the fireplace in the home. The fireplace keeps the room warm so Hestia would be seen as a god that keeps the warmth in your home. She is seen as gentle and dignified. She has a Roman name called Vesta and a Scythian name called Tabiti. She is one of the six children of Cronus and Rhea. There was a myth about Cronus swallowing all of his children. Rhea became displeased and when they had their sixth child, Rhea tricked Cronus into swallowing a rock. Then Zeus, the child, came back and overthrew his father. Hestia was a virgin goddess, therefore she has no husband or children. Apollo and Poseidon tried to marry Hestia but because Hestia wanted to remain a virgin, she had Zeus keep her forever a virgin. The Vestal Virgins had a lot to do with Hestia. The Vestal Virgins were females, who were chosen from the ages six through ten, who guarded and protected the sacred fire in Mount Olympus. They served for thirty years. The first ten years they were taught by the previous generation. Then the next ten years they served and the last ten years they taught the next generation to come. These females could not have any physical or mental deformity of some sort and both of their parents needed to be alive. Females that had this job were very much honored and respected. However, if the fire was put out, they would be taken into a dark room by the chief priest and be stripped and beaten. Artemis Our project is on the goddess Artemis. Her Roman name is Diana. She wears a knee-high chiton, which is a type of tunic; and is usually armed with bows and arrows. Her father, Zeus had an affair with Leto, her mother. When Artemis was born, she helped her mother give birth to her twin brother, Apollo. Zeus’s wife, Hera, was angry when she found out about the affair and banished Leto. Her domain was: hunting, lady of wild things, female child raiser, huntsman/chief to the gods, death and disease for females, and the moon. Her symbols were the bow and pike, and the cedar tree. The snake, bear, and deer were also her symbols because they were her sacred animals. Artemis is independent and prefers solitude. She is concerned with matters of outdoors, animals, environmental protection, and women’s communities. Artemis is a bit of a hypocrite. She raises young girls, and has the power to give them diseases and death. She loves animals, but she is a huntress. She forbids her nymphs from falling in love and claims she hates men, but she fell in love with the hunter Orion. One of the myth’s Artemis appears in is the one where she falls in love with Orion, the hunter. One day Orion was swimming far away from shore, and his head happened to look like a rock. Apollo, either jealous or wanting his sister to keep her chastity, tricked her into shooting the rock with one of her arrows. The arrow pierced his head, which killed him. Another version of the story says that sent a scorpion to sting Orion as punishment for staring at her inappropriately. She was so in love with him, she turned his body into a constellation closest to the moon so that she could always be with him. A character from pop culture that resembles Artemis is Katniss Everdeen, from “The Hunger Games”. Like Artemis, Katniss is a huntress. She took care of young girls, like Prim and Rue. They also both use arrows as their main weapon. An allusion from advertising is the Artemis dog food company. We thought this was perfect because Artemis loves animals, and this company makes food for them. They might have chosen this name to represent their brand so that when people remember the goddess Artemis and what she stood for, they’ll know how much the company cares for the dogs. Greek Name: Eros Roman Name: Cupid God of Love and Desire Eros’s symbol was a heart, bow, and arrow Eros is a mischievous and disobedient person. Eros can use different types of arrows to make people either fall in love with each other or hate each other. Zeus and Hera gave birth to Ares. Ares and Aphrodite gave birth to Eros. Zeus is Eros’ grandfather. Eros falls in love with Psyche and takes her to his castle. When Eros was asleep at night, Psyche uses a lamp to see Eros. Eros wakes up when the hot wax from the lamp had accidently touched his arm. Eros flew away because Psyche promised to never look at Eros’ face. Psyche travels around the world to find Eros and stumbles upon Aphrodite’s home. Aphrodite was jealous of Psyche’s beauty so Aphrodite forced Psyche to do tasks. Her last task was to bring a gift to Persephone in the underworld in exchange for a box of Persephone's beauty. On her way back she is curious to see what’s in the box and so she opens it and the god Hypnos comes out and makes her unconscious. Eros flies around and sees Psyche unconscious and begs Zeus to save her. Zeus is so amazed by their love that he makes Psyche immoral so they can be together. An allusion for Cupid is cupidplc.com. Strength: fearless Weakness: short tempered Power: He could turn people against their own self Myth: The myth about Ares took place during the Trojan War. He was madly in love with Aphrodite who set the war in motion. It’s pretty ironic because Ares had the power to turn people against their own selves, but Aphrodite turned him against his own family. To show his love and support for Aphrodite, he fought on the side of the Trojans. Ares charged at his own sister, Athena. She stopped him by calmly picking up a rock and smashing it over his head. Even though Ares was known as an immortal, he was almost killed when stuffed into a jar by two giants. Lastly, he was defeated by the Greeks. Allusion: There is a company called “Ares Security Vehicles” that was named after Ares. They used Ares name to show how strong and durable there cars would be. Some of his powers include going into and out of the underworld, being able to travel extremely fast on land and air, he can go where other gods couldn’t go, and he had superhuman strength. His weakness was his personality because he was very mischievous and tricked a lot of people. Myth: Zeus loved a nymph named Io but his wife Hera found out he was having an affair. Zeus quickly turned Io into a sheep hoping to deceive Hera but it didn’t work. Hera demanded that Zeus give the sheep to her as a gift. When Hera got her she put Io into Argus’ flock of sheep and made Argus guard Io. Argus was a hundred eyed giant that was told to protect the flock by Hera. Zeus was angered by this and he sent Hermes to rescue Io from the flock. Hermes slayed Argus by chopping his head off and he saved Io. Allusion: The allusion for Hermes is Hermes Bags. Myth summary: Hades fell in love with Persephone (daughter of Demeter and Zeus) and asked Zeus if he could marry her. Having no clue how to answer Hades, Zeus winked at Hades instead. When Hades sees Zeus winking at him he thought that Zeus had given him permission to marry Persephone. With that Hades kidnaps Persephone and took her to his dark realm in the underworld. While Persephone was in the underworld, Demeter realizes that Persephone was missing and roamed the earth for 9 days straight without food or drink to look for her. While Demeter searched for Persephone she found out that Hades had kidnapped her. Demeter wanted Persephone to be returned to her so she refused to let anything grow until she got her daughter back. Zeus fearing that the world would die from the lack of plants and food finally sent Hermes to the underworld to fetch Persephone. When Hades got the message he agreed to release Persephone but he only allowed her to go because Hades tricked her into eating pomegranate seeds. Those pomegranate seeds forced Persephone to go back to the underworld for 3 months every year. Allusion: We did our allusion on hell. We did it on hell, because in the new testaments Christians called hell Hades, because of the resemblance of Hades, hell and the underworld in which Hades rules. Hell is a dark and isolated place which pretty much describes Hades. Hell is also thought of as evil and because of this nobody exactly likes it. Hades can be described as the same. Hell also resembles the place where Hades rules. Hell and the underworld are both places where soul of a dead person goes although hell only accepts evil people while the underworld accepts all souls. There she prayed to her father, the river god, to turn her into a laurel tree. Apollo was still in love with her so he made the leaves of the tree remain green forever. Apollo then decided to create a wreath from the laurel leaves and wear it as a crown. Therefore making Antigone eat her own “hair” off. Allusion and Explanation: Hera’s Women Cancer Foundation uses Hera because she is the protector of women and Hera also empowered them and that’s what the Hera’s Women Cancer Foundation Does. Hera inspired them through what she rules over. Athena had a very competitive personality. She did not want to be looked down on, so she disguised herself as an old woman, and appeared in front of Arachne. She tried to warn Arachne about the consequences of boasting, and comparing herself to a goddess. Arachne claimed that she would gladly challenge Athena to a contest of weaving, and if she lost, she would accept any punishment. She revealed herself as Athena, and they began weaving. At the end of the contest, she had to admit that Arachne's skill was perfect. Athena felt humiliated, so she tore her work to shreds and broke everything. Arachne tried to hang herself, but Athena stopped her, by transforming her into a spider. Spiders began populating the earth.
