Intolerable Acts
The Boston Tea Party occurred as a reaction to the Tea Act, which was
imposed by the British Parliament in 1773. Many colonists were outraged by
the Tea Act, primarily because they believed that taxes should only be levied
by dulyelected representatives and that this representation is a basic right.
Colonists had no such representatives in the British Parliament. In at least
three colonies, protesters were able to stop ships from unloading taxed tea
at their harbor. Ships returned to England with their full loads. But in Boston,
Thomas Hutchinson, the royal governor, did not allow the ships to return the
tea to England. He underestimated the commitment of the protestors, who
decided to not only stop the unloading of the tea, but to destroy it rather
than give in to the British legislature.
According to the passage above, why were colonists so angry about the tea
delivered to Boston?
A
They were not allowed a say in the tax on the tea.
B
They were angry over the quality of the tea.
C
They felt England should pay the tax itself.
D They disliked the governor and wished to embarass him.
