Subject: Science
Grade: 4
Duration: 20 minutes
Focus Question: Why are our sense organs important?
Topic: The ears
Attainment Targets: Describe the role of the sense organ in human and other organism, in
enabling perception and actions.
Objectives: At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
o Identify the main functions of the ears
o Identify the importance of the ear in human life
o Explain how one can take care of and protect our ears
o Identify the three main sections of the ears
Key Vocabulary: ears, sound, wax, clean, sense organs, outer ears, middle ears, inner ears
Skills: Listening, demonstrating, Discussing, questioning, interpretation
Materials: Chart,
Strategies: Questioning and answer, Demonstration, lecturing
Activities: Discussion between teacher and students
Relating to the idea of being deaf
Making conclusion from references
Procedure:
 Teacher will introduce the lesson with a song about sounds.
 Teacher will ask student which sense organ is active for interpreting the sounds, then
they will be ask to declare what they think the topic will be about.
 Pupils will be ask where on their body can they locate their ears and to identify the
function of the ears. Teacher will prompt students for answers then will conclude at the
appropriate response (listening and balance).
 Teacher will pose situations to students for them to use their hearing to find a solution
to the condition as a means of demonstrating that earing is a function of the ear.
 Students will be ask to cover their ears with both hands tightly for one minute then they
will be ask to describe the experience while covering their ears .
 Teacher will go through the chart with the different sections of the ears followed by
discussion of their functions
 Teacher will discuss with students of how to protect and take care of their ears.
Assessments: Students will complete the worksheet in three groups.
(1)Describe the main functions of the ears and describe how people can take of the ears.
(2)Explain what it would be like without the ability to hear in know less than 25 words.
(3)Draw and label the three main section of the ears.
Content
What is the ears?
The ears are on sense organ of the body that is used for earing.
Human and mammals have two ears that are used to achieve sounds and to maintain balance.
Why are our ears important?
So why are our ears so important? Hearing gives us safety and security, communication with our world
and pleasure. Without even knowing it we depend heavily on hearing. From the moment we are born
How can I take care of my ears?
The ear is actually self-cleaning and for most people ear canals do not need to be cleaned.
We can take care of the ears by not putting anything in them that is smaller than our elbow, avoid
excessive loud noise etc. Wax is not formed in the deep part of the ear canal, but rather the
outer part of the canal near the external opening. If left alone, old earwax naturally migrates out
of the ear as a result of jaw movement.
The human ear is divided into three main sections, the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.
Sound waves enter your outer ear, travel through your ear canal to the middle ear and
the inner ear does the processing to the brain.
