Benton 114 XR Lab underwent a complete renovation over winter break.
Pro Seminar celebrated 10 years of presentations by faculty in research,
creative activities, and alternative teaching methods
SAS faculty and staff gathered for focus groups to discuss
“Recruitment/Marketing”.
The Voluntary Retirement Incentive Program was approved for 4 faculty
members: Phyllis Berry (Criminal Justice), Willie Dunlap (Allied Health),
Richard Martin (Legal Studies), and Carl Myers (Social Work). We wish
them the best of luck and they will be missed.

Allied Health:
Jean Sanchez and Zach Frank presented at the Kansas Physical Therapy
Association’s Spring Conference.
Zach Frank, Whitney Kinyua, and Jean Sanchez presented at the Business
and Health Administration Association International Conference in Chicago.
They took a group of allied health and nursing students to present their own
research.
Keith Farwell was recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of
Echocardiography, only the 6th to be recognized in Kansas.
Janice Bacon and Katlin Bryan recently attended the American Occupational
Therapy Association Annual Conference in Chicago.
The Technology Administration (TA) program volunteered to participate in the
Oral Communication USLO assessment pilot project. A recent TA graduate’s
presentation was recorded as an example to be used university-wide.

Criminal Justice and Legal Studies:
Washburn
Pat Dahl confirmed publication in the Community College Journal of
Research and Practice titled, “Community College Faculty: Attitude Toward Guns on Campus”. She had 2 encyclopedia
entries in Juvenile Justice and Delinquency titled, “Uniform Crime” and “Child Abductions”. She will also be
volunteering at the Topeka Correctional Facility this summer.
Richard Martin was a participant for a dissertation from a student at K-State.
Amy Memmer and Melanie Worsley have the Mediation WTE under way.
Amy Memmer’s manuscript on the significance of the “Morrissey v. Brewer” case was accepted for publication in the
Encyclopedia of Juvenile Delinquency. She gave 2 presentations at the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences
conference.
Melanie Worsley was named Secretary for the Heartland Mediator’s Association.
Jason Jolicoeur had 3 encyclopedia entries through the Encyclopedia of Juvenile Delinquency and Justice.
Numerous faculty attended the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Conference in Denver.
The Topeka Police Department donated a police car for the forensic investigation program to use for processing
evidence.
The City of Topeka is hiring Police Cadets and paying for them to complete their associate’s degree only at Washburn
University, while working a full-time position at the Topeka Police Department including all city benefits.
Human Services:
Kayla Waters and Zach Frank (AH) gave a presentation on assessment at the Midwest Regional Human
Services Conference and have an article coming out in the Academic Leader.
Deborah Altus had an article published in Communities, Journal of Cooperative Living. She will be presenting at
an international conference in Portugal this summer.
Ruth Owens-Jurgens attended a conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse.
Diane McMillen presented on prevention at an international conference in Spain.
Social Work:
Bassima Schbley received the Washburn University Achieving Excellence Award.
Allied Health:
At the Kansas Society of Radiologic Technologists convention resulted in the following student successes:
In the student essay competition, Mariah Bryan placed 2nd for her essay “The Road to Digital Radiography. Michelle
O’Connor placed 3rd for her essay “Proton Therapy for Pediatric Cancer: The New and Safer Radiation”.
For the Student Ray Bowl, similar to a quiz bowl, in the individual competitions students Mariah Bryan and Josie
Gonzales tied for 3rd place. In the team competition students Bethany Pressgrove, Josie Gonzales, and Travis
Brown placed 3rd.
Criminal Justice and Legal Studies:
Graduate student Cynthia C. was promoted from Sergeant (Corrections Officer II) to 1st Sergeant (Corrections
Specialist I) at the Topeka Correctional Facility.
Graduate student Jerry V. was involved in a case that is now a training point for other law enforcement agencies
regarding entry into a residence with an arrest warrant, use of a protective sweep, and obtaining a valid consent to
search.
