Life Science Check-In #1: What is an Ecosystem?
Key Vocabulary:
• Habitat – an area where an organism survives/lives
• Ecosystem – areas of living and nonliving interdependent factors including the
interaction of organisms
• Biome – large areas with similar geography, climate, plants and animals
Key Ideas:
• Be able to state what an organism needs from its habitat (food, water, space and
shelter)
• Be able to give examples of ecosystems around us (i.e. lakes, meadows, puddles,
forests)
• Know the general climate, location, plants and animals located within the following
biomes: desert, tundra, temperate/deciduous forest, taiga, rainforest, grassland,
saltwater/marine, taiga
• Know which biome we live in (temperate/deciduous forest)
• Understand that organisms from one biome will not be found within another biome if
their basic needs are not met
• Physical characteristics (geography of land and altitude) and climate (rainfall,
temperature, seasons) will determine what type of life can be supported within a
certain biome.
