AAI Lifetime Achievement Award
In recognition of distinguished scientific
accomplishment and extraordinary
service to AAI
Steven J. Burakoff, M.D.
The Tisch Cancer Institute, Mount
Sinai Medical Center
Dr. Burakoff ’s illustrious career has embodied the accomplishments
in science and service that the AAI Lifetime Achievement Award
honors. In service to the immunology community as an oncologist,
research scientist, and administrator, he has dedicated a lifetime to
defining the field of T cell biology and unmasking its signaling
pathways while inspiring over 50 pre- and post-doctoral trainees. In
roles ranging from department chair to cancer institute director, he
has proven to be not only a producer of consistently great science
but also a gifted administrator. Dr. Burakoff ’s enduring contributions extend well beyond his own professional arena through his
long and valued service on the AAI Council (as Secretary-Treasurer),
Finance Committee (including as Chair), Publications Committee,
and The Journal of Immunology (The JI) editorial board.

California Institute of Technology
Dr. Baltimore’s scientific contributions rank
among the most important in biomedical science. He has made an
equally lasting imprint on the field as an inspiring role model and
mentor to more than 200 trainees. His extraordinarily creative and
rigorous approach to basic science, as well as his remarkable personal
integrity and deep sense of responsibility to the greater scientific
community, have had a transformative influence on the careers of
his trainees.

Genentech, Inc.
Dr. Monroe provided exemplary leadership
and outstanding dedication as Chair of the
AAI Program Committee. His efforts sustained and enhanced the
standard for excellence in scientific and social programming that
characterizes the AAI Annual Meeting and advances the interests of
AAI members at every career stage.
AAI-Invitrogen Meritorious
Career Award
For outstanding research contributions
to the field of immunology
Michael J. Bevan, Ph.D.
HHMI, University of Washington
Dr. Bevan has defined many of the basic tenets
of T cell immunology during the course of his
distinguished career. Beginning in the 1970s, Dr. Bevan published
a series of groundbreaking findings widely validated over time. His
observations have led to the discovery of antigen cross-priming,
positive selection of T lymphocytes through self-MHC, and the
illumination of how effective CD8+ T cell memory responses are
generated. Many strategies underlying immunotherapy and cancervaccine development are based on Dr. Bevan’s research.
AAI-Dana Foundation Award in
Human Immunology Research
For significant and sustained achievement
in immunology research pertinent to
human disease pathogenesis, prevention,
and therapy
Jacques Banchereau, Ph.D.
Baylor Institute for Immunology Research
This award recognizes Dr. Banchereau both for his pioneering work
on human B cells and dendritic cells, and for his significant
contributions to the understanding and therapeutic modulation of
human disease. His establishment of the Baylor Institute for
Immunology Research has fostered intense collaboration and
complementation between basic scientists and clinicians representing
expertise in cancer, autoimmunity, infectious diseases, and
transplantation, yielding significant progress in translational research.
AAI-BD Biosciences Investigator Award
For outstanding, early-career research
contributions to the field of immunology
Chen Dong, Ph.D.
The University of Texas MD Anderson
Cancer Center
Dr. Dong has made a host of important contributions to the competitive fields of costimulation and peripheral T cell differentiation, most
recently in the description of the inflammatory Th17 cell subset.
This award recognizes Dr. Dong, already a leader in his field at an
early stage of his career, for both his impressive accomplishments to
date and for his clear promise of continued success in the future.
