Name_______________________________Block______ Unit 4: Forces at a Distance Learning Targets Activity Reflection How am I doing on this? I can distinguish the relationship between electricity and magnetism I can describe the interaction between like and unlike charges in both electricity and magnetism. I can explain using data how factors such as magnitude and distance impact electric and magnetic forces I can explain using data how factors such as magnitude, distance and mass impact the force of gravity in various scenarios. What is electricity? What is magnetism? How are electricity and magnetism related? Electricity (Electric Force)- is the attraction and repulsion between electric charges Magnetism- is the attraction and repulsion between magnetic materials. The relation between electricity and magnetism- Moving electric charges will create a magnetic field. The movement of a magnet can create electricity. When the forces combine together they create what is called an electromagnet. Fill in the blanks below. Like charges ATTRACT while unlike charges REPEL Draw a model of like charges interacting What is magnitude? Magnitude is related to the strength of the force. The stronger the magnitude the stronger the force (this is simple terms) to bump it up magnitude is dependent on the net forces exerted on an object. This net force is dependent of the acceleration and the mass of the object. What is the difference between static electricity and current electricity? Static electricity is when charges build up on an object but they do not flow continuously. While current electricity is when the electricity flows from point A to point B. How is earth like a magnet? Draw an example. The Earth’s inner core and outer core rotate around each other making the earth a giant electromagnet. This spinning causes a magnetic atmosphere that pushes magnetic particles from space around the earth. This magnetic field is also what’s in charge of the aurora borealis Draw a model of opposite charges interacting What is an electromagnet? Give an example and draw an electromagnet with labels and describe how it works. An electromagnet is a magnet where an electric current runs through it. When using a battery the greater the number of coils around the battery, the stronger the electromagnet becomes. The strength can also increase due to the amount of voltage. What does the gravitational pull on earth look like? Does mass or weight have an effect on the gravitational pull? Explain in detail. Earth’s gravitational field is always pulling objects towards earth. This force acts at a distance and is always attractive. The greater the mass of an object the greater the pull. Also the closer an object is to the center of the earth, the great the pull is as well. This is why you may weigh less in a higher city or building than on the coast.
