Fluid restriction
Controlling your fluid intake is an important part of your treatment. The
amount of fluid allowed differs from one person to another because it
depends on the amount of urine that you pass daily.
Drinking more than your daily fluid allowance on a regular basis can lead
to fluid overload. This can lead to:
z Shortness of breath due to fluid on the lungs (pulmonary oedema)
z Leg swelling (oedema)
z High blood pressure
z Thickening of the heart muscle due to excess workload
Rapid weight gain over a short period is due to accumulation of fluid.
Exceeding your fluid allowance is likely to worsen dialysis-related
symptoms.
Your fluid allowance is ............................… mls/day
2
What fluids should you include in your fluid
allowance?
All liquids in your diet should be included in your fluid allowance. This
includes water, tea, squash, juice, thin dahls, gravy from casseroles/stews,
soup, lassi, thin milk puddings e.g. custard & ice cream, ice cubes,
yoghurts and jelly.
Other important things to consider are:
z Don’t forget to include any fluid, for example milk, water, fruit juice you
add to breakfast cereals
z Include fluids taken with medications in your allowance
3
Helpful tips to help with fluid control
z Reduce your intake of salt, salty and spicy foods
z Fill a jug with the volume of the fluid you are allowed daily. When you
have any fluid, remove an equal volume from the jug. This may help to
keep track of the fluid allowance throughout the day
z Try to drink only when you are thirsty rather than out of habit. Avoid
taking drinks with meals. Save them for between meals
z If you are drinking to be sociable and are choosing an alcoholic drink,
remember that spirits are lower in volume than beer or lager. However,
if you are going to add a mixer and ice cubes (e.g. lemonade) then this
must be counted in your allowance
z Try sipping your drinks through a straw to prevent you gulping them too
quickly
4
z Use a smaller cup for drinking
z Take tablets with meals rather than with fluids, unless the doctor tells
you otherwise
z Freeze ice cubes with a drop of lemon in them and suck the cubes
slowly
z Suck thin slices of lemon to help quench your thirst
z Sugar free mints or chewing gum will help to stimulate the production of
saliva
z Rinse your mouth with mouthwash or iced water, or clean your teeth to
freshen your mouth. Remember not to swallow the fluid
z When having tinned fruit, drain away any juice/syrup
