What I Should Know
Green plants can make their own food.
We call the process by which green plants make their
food photosynthesis.
The food made during photosynthesis is called starch.
Foods such as bread, pasta, rice and potatoes etc – which
are made from plants, contain lots of starch.
We can test for starch using iodine solution.
Io
di
Iodine solution changes from red/brown to blue black
n
when starch is present.
e
If plant leaves contain starch this tells us they have been
S
carrying out photosynthesis.
ol
There are several steps involved in testing plant leaves
uti
for starch:o
1. Boil the leaf – this bursts the plant cells open.
n
2. Place the leaf in ethanol (alcohol) - to remove the
green colour.
3. Rinse the leaf - to remove the excess alcohol
4. Add iodine to test for starch
Ethanol is flammable and cannot be taken near the
Bunsen burner.
Plants need light to photosynthesise. Plants in the dark
cannot make starch.
During photosynthesis plants use up the gas carbon
dioxide.
Bicarbonate indicator is an indicator is an indicator which
is red in normal air. Yellow in air with a high level of
carbon dioxide and purple in air with a low level of
carbon dioxide.
We can show plants use carbon dioxide by
placing cabomba (water plant) into bicarbonate
indicator.
Cabomba in light with bicarbonate indicator will
make the indicator purple. This is because the
plants use up carbon dioxide
Cabomba in bicarbonate indicator kept in the dark will
make the bicarbonate indicator yellow as they cannot
photosynthesise.
Plants make the gas oxygen during photosynthesis.
The test for oxygen is that it will re light
a
glowing taper.
We can collect and test the gas produced
by a water plant to show that it is oxygen.
The oxygen produced by plants is breathed in by animals.
The more light a plant has the more it will
photosynthesise.
The experiment demonstrates this.
The closer the light is moved towards
the beaker – the more bubbles of
oxygen are produced.
Photosynthesis can be summarised as:Carbon + Water
Dioxide
Sunlight Starch
+Oxygen
Without plants animals could not
survive. Plants provide animals
with food and oxygen.
Plant growers use chemicals to help the plants grow
successfully.
Herbicides kill unwanted plants (weed killers)
Fungicides kill fungal infections
Insecticides kill insects that would eat the plants
Fertilisers contain chemical such as nitrogen that help
the plants to grow.
