YEAR 5 MUSIC
PERIODS: 2 x 35 mins.
PREP: none
Autumn Term:
Introduction to staff notation, the piano keyboard and beat and tempo. (Ace Maestro
lesson 1-3) Units 1, 2&3 from “Lively Music 9-11” including pulse, Irish dancing,
singing, and the elements of music. Listening & appraising: Mozart and Katchaturian’s
“Sabre Dance”.
Practical music making: Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy”, Purcell’s “Rigaudon”, easy
Christmas carols. Improvisation: make up a simple 4-bar rhythm for hand percussion.
Aural: recognizing & echo clapping basic 2/3/4 beat groupings, AB aural tests grade 1,
and basic rhythm/expression cards.
Singing: various one and two part songs/rounds. Year 5 Christmas Play.
Spring Term
Playing with pitch, the ABC of the piano keyboard, hearing rhythms, note identification
games and time signatures. (Ace 4-8 and 18) Units 4 & 6 from “Lively Music 9-11”
including lessons on mood, dynamics, and tempo. Transport music, Brahms’ “Hungarian
Dance no. 5” and Smetana’s “Vltava”. Learning Italian terms & expressions.
Practical music making: “Au clair de la lune” and “My bonnie”.
Improvisation: melody jigsaw. (p. 90 Lively Music), create a piece of weather music
using a graphic score.
Aural: basic rhythm cards recognizing & echo clapping 2/3/4 beat groupings, AB grade 1
and 2 listening tests and note/expression cards.
Summer Term
Recap on basic rhythm notation, line and space notes, rests, melodic contour. (Ace 9-18)
Units 7 & 9 from “Lively Music 9-11” on fanfares and festivals, ethnic music, timbre &
texture, orchestral instruments & families. Listening and appraising Strauss and Vivaldi
and Britten’s “Young Person’s Guide”. End of Year Test including listening and theory
elements on Bizet’s Carmen. Compose an 8-bar melody, showing key awareness and
structure on a given rhythm.
Practical music making: “Yankee Doodle”, easy Caribbean: e.g. “Island in the sun”.
Aural: AB grade 1 and 2, music appraisal and analysis tests.
YEAR 6 MUSIC
PERIODS: 2 x 35 mins.

Autumn Term
Note values, pitch and rhythm notation; identifying different timbres, tones and semitones. (Ace 21, 23-26)
Look at Units10-12 from “Lively Music 9-11” including mathematical divisions of
values in music notation in relation to the time signature and African poly rhythms with
hand percussion. Listen & appraise Monteverdi anthem, learn to conduct simple time
signatures and appraise a variety of musical styles.
Practical music making: Jazz/Blues workshop pieces, “Island in the sun”, “Cha, cha, cha”
and “Charleston”. Improvisation: improvise a blues solo extended over a 12 bar blues
pattern.
Aural: poly rhythms and Grade 2 AB and Guildhall aural tests, echo clapping/singing and
music appraisal/analysis tests. Note and expression cards for memory training.
Spring Term
Recap rests and note names/values,. Introduce tones and semi-tones, scales, major and
minor. Explain use of sharps and flats, keysignatures and syncopation. Unit 13-14 of
“Lively Music 9-11” on scales and modes, appraise ethnic scales and modes, composing
a melody. Japanese music/composition project (“Music Matters II”) showing
understanding of style and making use of the In-scale. Sing Japanese and Jewish songs
and a spiritual. (“Dem bones” illustrates scales and semi-tones)
Practical music: “Alouette”, “Mexican clapping song”, “Yellow Bird”. Improvisation
based on ethnic and western scales.
Year 6 Play.
Summer Term
Semi-quavers, intervals, major scales and ¾ beat groupings. (Ace 37-41) Unit 16 and 17
on communication & expression of emotions and moods in music. Listening to and
appraising Mussorgsky’s “Promenade and Gnome” from Pictures at an Exhibition,
comparing with Ravel’s orchestration. End of year Test appraising Carmina Burana.
Compose scary music to a short Dracula sequence, using short musical excerpts and
original materials.
Practical music making:“Batman” and “Morning has broken” (broken chords).
Improvisation: make up some variations on a theme, using major-minor, chord-broken
chord accompaniment, fast-slow, high-low, loud-quiet and timbre variation.
Aural: AB grade 2 B “spot the difference” and C, raising awareness of styles and periods.

Music Matters 1 (11-14) Project 1:
Part-singing, listening & appraising Janacek’s “Sinfonietta” and Dvorak’s melody from
“New World Symphony”. Ternary form explored through group performing and Remix
music tech workshop at St.Luke’s, London. (LSO)
Project 2: the Music of Java and Bali; gamelan. Performing “Tempung ketan” at St.
Luke’s, London (LSO workshop) Listening and appraising Poulenc’s “Concerto for two
pianos”.
Ace Maestro: time signatures and compound time. (lesson 43 and 45)
Spring Term
Music Matters 1 Project 4:
Working with chords (triads) and broken chords as accompaniments to tunes. Listening
& appraising Monteverdi’s introduction to “Orfeo” and Vespers. Research Tudor and
Renaissance period instruments. Performing and singing “Eleanor Rigby” (McCartney)
with backing chords and riffs, steel band Calypso music with primary chords, Reggae
music (“Charlie Marley”). Listening test on chords and related theory. Exploring major/
minor keys and tonic. (Ace 42, 44 and 47)
Summer Term
Music Matters 1 Project 6:
Ragtime music; metre & structure, syncopation and history. Performing: “The
Entertainer”. Listening & appraising Ragtime dance music. Vamping chords to short
ragtime tunes.
Lesson 48, Ace Maestro, exploring harmony and chord changes. Composing: “Doodle
Pad” (Ace), compose a syncopated rag with chord accompaniment.
YEAR 8 MUSIC
PERIODS: 1 x 35 mins.

Autumn Term
Music Matters 2 Project 1 & 2:
The Rock n’ Roll era and recurring chord patterns. Revising primary chords and
introducing three-chord clichés. Recap Ace lesson 48 on chords.
Performing: “Buddies” and some scat singing.
Improvising: composing melodies from chords on Doodle Pad.
Listening & appraising: “Tutti Frutti” (Elvis Presley), assessing chord changes etc.
Spring Term
Music Matters Project 3:
Rondos and recurring structures; repetition and contrast, verse & chorus.
Performing: Poulenc’s “Carillon” and Jazz/Blues pieces.
Listening & appraising Poulenc’s “Carillon” and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, following
the Rondo plan.
Test theory knowledge and music expressions: grade 3 AB.
Summer Term
Music Matters Project 4:
Revising pulse and compound time. Explore summary of music periods/composers with
accompanying excerpts of most famous pieces.
Performing: Suffolk Morris and the “Dargason”, Vivaldi’s “Autumn” and Pachelbell’s
“Canon”.
Listening & appraising: Ace Juke Box.
Year 8 Musical or Revue.
