What the Teacher Needs to Know about Feature P : Silent and Sounded Consonants (Description – p. 170, Word Lists – p. 261) This feature looks at related words in which one has a sounded consonant and the other has a silent consonant such as condemn/condemnation. Although there is not an abundance of words which exhibit this feature, it is an excellent starting point for derivational constancy study because students can usually spell the “sounded” word easier than the “unsounded” word. This encourages them to make the connection between these forms when spelling them.
