South County Hospital 401 782-8000 South County Home Health 401 782-0500 South County Medical Group 401 782-8000 South County Surgical Supply 401 783-1850 Sleep—An Essential Component Of Your Health A good night’s sleep supports your immune system, regulates your appetite, improves brain function and more The month of May is noted nationally as “Better Sleep Month,” a time when it’s hoped you’ll begin to think about the quality of your sleep, your sleep habits, and how you feel when you wake up in the morning. All of these are topics you should discuss with your doctor at your annual exam or, better yet if you think you may have a sleep disorder, sooner than that. If you snore (and you can be sure someone in your household will let you know if you do!), you are likely not getting a full night’s sleep. Snoring is one of the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea, a sleep disorder that means you are literally going without oxygen sporadically throughout the night. The results: you’ll feel tired even after eight hours of “sleep,” you find yourself dozing off during the day without wanting to, and you often awaken with a headache. But there’s far more going on with the normal functioning of virtually every one of your body systems when you are chronically deprived of sufficient sleep. Untreated sleep apnea can initiate or exacerbate high blood pressure, and it can worsen other conditions, too, including diabetes and heart disease. Sleep apnea can cause memory problems, daytime headaches, impotency, and weight gain. You snooze, you lose It’s true: while you sleep, your body increases production of leptin, an appetite-suppressing hormone that affects your metabolism and helps burn calories more efficiently. When your sleep is interrupted as it is by sleep apnea, leptin levels fall and the hunger hormone, ghrelin, takes over, increasing your appetite and storing more calories as fat. Asleep at the wheel Because sleep apnea sufferers are always tired, untreated sleep apnea not only affects job performance but also puts those suffering from it at risk for automobile accidents. A study published last year by AAA reported that drowsy drivers are involved in nearly one-quarter of fatal crashes. Specifically, drowsy driving is responsible for an estimated 328,000 crashes each year, including 109,000 injury crashes and 6,400 fatal crashes. A common problem, commonly ignored Sleep apnea is seriously underdiagnosed, according to sleep disorder experts; conservative estimates are that only one in five individuals with obstructive sleep apnea has been diagnosed. For one thing, symptoms can seem more of a nuisance than a health hazard. Add to that the fact that many primary care doctors don’t ask about sleep habits and most patients don’t raise the subject and you can see why. The good news: sleep studies are covered by health insurance, as are the treatment options if sleep apnea is diagnosed. A sleep study can take place in a sleep lab or, nowadays, at home. The Sleep Disorders Lab at South County Hospital, accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, is a regional resource for the diagnosis of sleep disorders, attracting patients from across Washington County and beyond. Anne Hebert, MD, pulmonologist, is the medical director of the sleep lab and the staff are experienced, certified polysomnographers. If you snore, have trouble sleeping, or wake up tired after a full night’s sleep, speak to your doctor about a referral to the South County Hospital Sleep Disorders Lab. It’s hard to believe we’ll celebrate the oneyear anniversary on May 23. Since its opening, the Medical & Wellness Louis R. Giancola Center President & CEO has been South County Health welcomed by the residents of Westerly and the surrounding towns, and we are grateful for that. All of our services there were busy right from the start, which confirms the need we had recognized when we first began planning the Center a couple of years earlier. During the past 12 months, individuals of all ages and from all walks of life have made their way to the Medical & Wellness Center to use the Urgent/WalkIn Care clinic, the lab and X-ray services, physical therapy, or for an appointment with a doctor. Within the 32,000 sq. ft. light-filled building, there are physicians specializing in primary care, OB/GYN, orthopedics, dermatology, cardiology, podiatry, general surgery, wound care, gastroenterology, and support services for diabetes, nutrition, and medication management. But there is far more than medical services that have been drawing people to the building. Since its opening, we have hosted two or more free evening lectures per month there, on topics ranging from the hazards of radon gas; joint replacement options; creating a birth plan; common foot problems and treatment options; back pain; healthful cooking; preparing a family pet for the arrival of a new baby, and much more. We have also held a number of public flu vaccination clinics at the Medical & Wellness Center; offered free prenatal yoga classes on Saturday mornings; and weekly, the building hosts a lively gathering of the New Moms’ Support Group. Information on all of these offerings can be found on our website at www.southcountyhealth.org. The medical services provided in the building as well as the educational and support services we offer there reflect our commitment to meeting the needs of the communities we serve. That is what drives us and is, I believe, manifested in myriad ways throughout the year. That passion is reflected in our Vision statement: “To forge extraordinary connections with our community that support health at every stage of life.” As we emerge from winter to a beautiful Rhode Island spring, I hope you are enjoying all that this season has to offer. If spring weather is inspiring you to take steps to improve your health, we’d be honored to assist. Visit us online and learn more about our services, our providers, classes, free lectures, free newsletters and more. Happy spring! [email protected] South County Health Board of Trustees Eve T.
