Katie presents the
Crystal Award and
Certificate for the
Encephalitis
Society Community
Fund Raiser of the
Year Award to
P e n d l e
Hippodrome
Theatre Chairman
Kevin Mason.
In 2014 one of our young members, Katie Chadwick, was diagnosed with
Encephalitis, a life threatening rare condition. She was in a medically
induced coma for over five months but is now well on the road to a full
recovery. In July 2015 Pendle Hippodrome Theatre Company hosted a
Grand Gala Charity Concert in aid of the Encephalitis Society. Over £4000
was raised and together with other fund raising events held by friends of
Katie and her family a total over £15,000 was raised for the Society. In
November Katie and her family and friends were invited to the Encephalitis
Society’s 21st Anniversary and Awards Night at Glaziers Hall in London. To
their amazement they were presented with ‘The Community Fundraiser of
the Year Award’. The Chadwick family and friends were delighted to receive
this prestigious Award and felt the Award belonged not just to themselves
but to everyone who had helped raise the money.
On the opening night of the Theatre’s Craft Fair in November the Chadwick
family, together with Katie herself, presented the Award to Theatre
Chairman, Kevin Mason, and the Crystal Award is now proudly displayed in
the Theatre Foyer next to our Queen’s Award For Voluntary Service.

Note for your Diary: Next Classic Film
Night will be on the 18th June at 7.30 pm
It is now a year since we purchased the
Derby Arms next to the Theatre. Things
have moved on and although nothing major
has been done hundreds of small jobs have
been undertaken. The maintenance team
have been very busy at the Theatre and the
work at the ‘pub’ has to take a backseat but
improvements are slowly being made.
More helpers would come in handy!
A Pre-Planning Submission has been sent
to Pendle Council for the new roof. The
Theatre gratefully received a grant of £5000
from The Theatre’s Trust towards the cost
of the new roof at the end of last year.
Every year the Friends of the Hippodrome
donations are allocated to a major project in
the Theatre and this year the Board of
Directors have decided to allocate the
contributions to the much needed roof fund.
Note from the Friends Secretary:
We apologise in advance to the Friends as
we won’t be able to show you the work
being carried out on your behalf.
Unfortunately there can be no ribbon
cutting ceremony when it is finished as
there was with the newly refurbished toilets.
Our insurance will not cover hoisting up all
our Friends onto the roof to view the work
or cut a ribbon. Sorry!
PS: If you would like to become a Friend of
the Hippodrome application
forms can be found in the
Theatre Box Office.

It is with sadness that 11
we report the deaths of
Hugh Cotton
16th December 2015
aged 85 years
Hugh was for many years the
Treasurer for Colne Operatic
Society. His wife Audrey was an
acting member of the Society but
Hugh himself never ventured on
stage preferring to perform the
vital off stage role of Treasurer.
He was a musician and a
member of Colne Orchestra
where he played the violin in the
string section.
Pauline Crowther
10th December 2015
Aged 71 years
Pauline was a member of the
Freelance Society in the 1980s.
When she first joined the Society
she worked backstage as a
dresser but ventured onto the
stage several times in the chorus.
She appeared in the 1988
production of ‘Annie Get Your
Gun’ and joined the cast of St
John’s AO&DS acclaimed 1991
play ‘Allo! Allo!’.
Pauline and her husband Keith
were also involved in the original
setting up of our now Annual
Craft Fair along with the late
Vincent and Janet Waterworth.
We would like to express
our sincere condolences

friends.

Wednesday 17th to Saturday 20th February 2016
7.30 pm nightly with a Saturday Matinee performance at 2 pm.
‘The Pendle Hippodrome stage is about to be transformed into ‘The Merry Old Land
of OZ’ as ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ Dorothy Gale and her little dog are swept
off into Munchkin Land by a huge ‘twister’. Glinda The Good Witch of the North
tells Dorothy that the only person who can help her return safely home to Aunt Em
and Uncle Henry in Kansas is the Wizard of OZ and she must ’Follow The Yellow
Brick Road’ to find him.
Dorothy begins her journey to OZ and along the way she meets the Tinman who
wants to ask the Wizard for a heart, the Scarecrow who would like a brain and the
Cowardly Lion who would love to be courageous. Together they all skip along the
Yellow Brick Road in search of the Wizard and
their hearts’ desires.
All that stands in their way is the Wicked Witch of
the West with her helpers and evil spells. But
have no fear, Dorothy has her Ruby Slippers,
given to her by Glinda, to help her on her journey
to the Emerald City where she hopes to find The
Wonderful Wizard of OZ.
‘The Wizard of OZ’ is a great show for all the
family. There’s something for everyone, singing,
dancing, laughter and lots of colourful characters.

to deliver to the

He was once again
resplendent in his

Queens Award for Voluntary Service (Update)
Waiting to go into the Grotto
Around 40 people, of all ages, attended and everyone had a great time. There was
music and laughter and games for both adults and children. Pam Lomax had
compiled some testing quiz sheets which kept
the adults busy as the children enjoyed their
party games.
There was an ample ’Jacobs Join’ supper
served after everyone had visited Father
Christmas in his Grotto. Old and young alike
were able to sit on Santa’s knee and tell him
what they would like
him to bring in their
Christmas stocking.
Christmas
Santa’s Elves - -- Ella and Grace Father
was accompanied by
two of his helpers Elf and Safety. In the past he has
been accompanied by his male elves Joe and Daniel
but this year he brought along two of his female elves,
Ella Thompson and Grace Hall who did an excellent job
controlling the crowds who wanted to visit Santa.
At the end of the night
everyone toddled off home
to await another visit from
the ‘Man in Red’ and a very
enjoyable evening was had
One of Santa’s younger visitors
by all.
Thanks to everyone involved, especially the Grotto
builders, Andrew for the music, the busy bar staff, Pam
and Fiona for the games, Dennis for his usual ‘Squares’
and of course Father Christmas and his lovely helpers.

When our Craft Fair secretary Sheila Keogh sent out invitations to the Craft
Fair she included the people on the local panel who assess nominations for
the Queen's Award. Chris Beverley is an assessor for the Queen's Award
and he and his wife Sheila live on the Fylde Coast so were near enough to take up
our invitation. They came along to the Craft Fair on the Tuesday to see what we
were all about. They were introduced to our members and friends who were there
and they were taken on a full tour including lighting, sound, the circle, backstage,
the flies, workshops, props and wardrobe and all points in-between. They were
amazed at the size and extent of the Craft Fair and at the Theatre in general,
although it was difficult to see the 'Theatre' beneath its covering of stalls. After
spending time browsing around the Fair they stayed for lunch and an opportunity to
relax, chat and witness for themselves many of our volunteers in action.
Chris explained how the Queen's Award process works. Nominations are
assessed by an individual from the local assessment panel who goes along to see
what the Charity does and how it is run. They then go back and give a presentation
to the panel who then decide which ones to send to the National Award Committee
in London. Recommendations are then passed to the Cabinet Office which sends
the final list to the Queen for her approval. This is the highest award given to
volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work in their communities.
The members of the Queen's Award committee very rarely get to see for
themselves the winners of the award and what they do so Chris was extremely
pleased to be able to come and see us. He asked lots of questions about the
history of the organisation and how we are run nowadays. He was very impressed
with everything he had seen and confirmed that the award had indeed gone to an
organisation worthy of the honour. His wife Sheila put the Craft Fair on her calendar
for next year as she nearly sorted all her Christmas present list during her visit.
Chris did say that Charities who are ‘very good’ do not make the cut, only Charities
that are 'exceptional' go through to final selection. So give yourselves a pat on the
back, we are exceptional.

Craft Fair 2015
The 27th Annual Craft Fair took
place in November and was
yet again a resounding
success. The Craft Fair
Committee are delighted to
announce that preliminary figures show
that the Craft Fair of 2015 is expected to
yield a profit of an estimated £11,300.
We had around 2100 plus people
through the doors during the week,
some of whom returned time after time.
A huge Thank You and well done to
anyone who helped in any way.
NILON-DURKIN
Theatre
Company
member Sophie Nilon
is
delighted
to
announce she has
become engaged to
Mr Tom Durkin.
Tom unexpectedly proposed to Sophie
on a weekend away in Manchester in
November.
Sophie played the part of ‘Irene
Malloy’ in PHTC’s production ‘Hello
Dolly’ and has appeared in the chorus
of many shows.
Congratulations to Sophie and Tom

Christmas with the Youth Theatre
November and December were busy times
Winter
for many of our Youth Theatre members.
Wonderland
Several young members could be found
clearing tables and helping with the washing
up at the Annual Craft Fair.
Colne hosted a Food Fair on Saturday 28th
November in the Town Centre. The cast
intended to go through the street wearing
their Wizard of OZ costumes but it was a
very very cold, wet and windy day and the
costumes would have been ruined so our
young members put on their waterproofs and
wellies and braved the bad weather to hand out flyers publicising our forthcoming
productions to the intrepid people who braved the elements to attend. The weather
was so bad that the Food Fair was all but abandoned by lunch time and our
youngsters returned home very cold and wet indeed.
On 12th December our youngsters were off again, this time for a whole day to
Burnley College’s Winter Wonderland event. They sang carols (totally unrehearsed)
and handed out leaflets once again promoting not only the Youth Theatre but
Pendle Hippodrome and all its events. (More photos on page 13)
And never let it be said that the youngsters at our Youth Theatre are bored, they
don’t have time! For even though they were busy rehearsing for ‘The Wizard of OZ’
they still found time to bring Christmas cheer to the residents of not one but five old
peoples Care Homes in the area.
Carol Singing
Carol
Singing
After they had finished rehearsing
from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm for their
February show they donned their
Christmas jumpers and hats and
went off carol singing at
Belvedere, Heather Grange, Dove
Court, Nelson Manor and The
Grange Care Homes. A special
thank you to Peter Elmer who
accompanied the carols and Lisa Manley who conducted their beautiful singing and
to all the adults who attended the events with the youngsters.
Well done guys, hope you all had a great Christmas.
Here Comes Christmas
The Theatre auditorium was full as Colne Orpheus Male Voice Choir,
PYO Music and Pendle Children’s Choir joined together when the Theatre
hosted a feast of Christmas music with ‘Here Comes Christmas’.
The evening ended with everyone joining a festive sing along, including the
audience, and everybody went away to celebrate the rest of Christmas with a
smile on their face and a song in their heart.

Youth Theatre News
Pendle Hippodrome Youth Theatre will once
again open its doors to both old and new
members in March 2016 as rehearsals begin
for the fantastic 2017 show ELF The Musical
JR. The exact date is yet to be announced so
look out for announcements in your newsletter
and Facebook pages.
ELF is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into
Santa's sack and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually
human, Buddy's enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the
truth. Buddy embarks on a journey to find his birth father, discover his true identity
and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.
The show will be Directed by Josh Hindle, Gillian Mason is Musical Director and the
Choreographer is Cathryn Osborne.
Membership of the Youth Theatre is open to all young people providing they are 10
years old or over. Performing and non-performing members are all welcome, no
previous experience is necessary and no audition is required to take part in a
production, although auditions are required for principal roles. Membership is
currently £10 per year and there is a £1 per rehearsal charge which covers
rehearsal room rent and insurance etc. Rehearsals are held at Colne Ambulance
Hall on Sunday mornings 10.30am to 12.30 pm with rehearsals extended to 3 pm
nearer the show.
Come and join the fun ‘ELF’ is only the start!
It seems like such a shame but now the Supermarkets have to
charge 5p for a carrier bag the days of raising much needed
funds by packing peoples bags while at the same time promoting
Pendle Hippodrome Theatre have more or less disappeared.
People seemingly do not want their own bags packed by willing
volunteers!.
HOWEVER our youngsters do not take defeat easily and decided
that the days of fundraising and promoting our shows in Supermarkets are not yet
over. ASDA have very kindly allowed our youngsters the opportunity to promote
‘The Wizard of OZ’ at their Colne store on 6th February. They will hand out leaflets
not only promoting their own show but ‘GREASE’ and all forthcoming Theatre
events. They will dress in costume and tour the store and run a Tombola stall in
ASDA’s foyer. You can even book your tickets for ’The Wizard of OZ during your
visit.
Please go along and support them, ASDA Saturday 6th February Don’t forget!
Unfortunately the planned Karaoke Night on the 15th
January had to be cancelled as not enough people
wanted to come along for a fantastic hilarious evening.
What a shame it sounded like ‘such fun’

It is one of Rogers and Hammerstein's best loved musicals and is set against the
dramatic background of an idyllic South Pacific island during WWII, ‘South Pacific’
intertwines the themes of romance, duty, and prejudice to create a story that is
hilarious, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking.
The show contains some of Rogers and Hammerstein's best ever music ‘There is
Nothing Like a Dame’, ‘Bali Ha’i’, ‘This Nearly Was Mine’, ‘Gonna Wash That Man
Right Out of My Hair’’ and ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ to name but a few. The show
