ANNEX A Winners of WIPO-IPOS IP Awards 2015 1. Hawaii Furnishing Pte Ltd ( ScanTeak) IPOS Award for Design Innovation Representative: Ms Jamie Lim, Regional Marketing Director Hawaii Furnishing (ScanTeak) is an international furniture company, with a global network of six corporate offices that oversee more than a hundred stores and retail outlets worldwide. A family-run operation founded in 1974 to offer European furniture designs created with Asian materials—‘Scan’ was chosen to allude to Scandinavia, and ‘Teak’ to refer to the dark Asian wood used in its furniture—ScanTeak now employs nearly more than 500 staff across Asia, Europe and the United States, and achieved a turnover of over $100 million last year. Scanteak aligns its design innovation and marketing strategy with its IP strategy. Moving away from a manufacturing-centric business model to a more consumercentric one, ScanTeak launched its Prologue Collection, which is backed by an R&Dintensive approach to cater to consumer lifestyles and market needs. The birth and success of the Prologue Collection has made ScanTeak an industry role model in embracing design awareness and focussing on design innovation. 2. Stratech Systems Limited IPOS Award for Technology Patent Representative: Dr David K.M. Chew, Executive Chairman The Stratech Group is a market leader in technology innovation, whose key breakthroughs include intelligent vision systems – highly sophisticated and adaptive technologies that provide precise image processing solutions for surveillance and security. Building on its long expertise in developing mission-critical e-systems for both government and business clients, it is now making swift inroads into the aerospace sector with its iFerretTM airfield/runway surveillance and Foreign Object & Debris detection system. This flagship product has been deployed in major airports such as Singapore’s Changi Airport, Dubai International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport. It has recently won its first contract from a U.S. commercial airport, Miami International Airport, which is also one of the world’s top commercial aviation hubs. Since its certification by the US Federal Aviation Administration in 2012, the iFerret™ patented technology has been successfully deployed in major airports, generating significant revenue for the company, including recurring revenue for the maintenance of the surveillance system. With continued innovation, as demonstrated in the development of iFerret™, Stratech is positioned to capture new business opportunities as they emerge and sustain its long-term growth. 3. MindChamps Holdings Pte Limited IPOS Award for Trade Mark Portfolio Representative: Mr David Chiem, Founder, Chairman and Group CEO MindChamps is an international mind development institute that has trained over 60,000 students from pre-school to university level in the art of learning and in having a winning mindset. MindChamps synthesised research from the 4 domains of Education, Psychology, Neuroscience and Theatre to addressing the gap that exists in education wherein children are taught what to learn and not how to learn. MindChamps has registered a comprehensive portfolio of trade marks to protect its products and services both locally and overseas. This has allowed the company to pursue a successful franchise model, underpinned by its established brand name and scientifically validated curriculum, which is designed to ensure children develop a deep passion for learning and a Champion Mindset. 4. Stratech Systems Limited (Overall champion) WIPO IP Enterprise Trophy Stratech has had a positive impact on airfield safety and security through its iFerret™ Intelligent Airfield/Runway Surveillance and Foreign Object & Debris Detection System. This important contribution sets Stratech apart, and led the judges to recognise it as the overall champion of the IPOS IP Awards and winner of the WIPO IP Enterprise Trophy. 5. Creative Technology Limited WIPO Users’ Trophy Representative: Mr S. Sivananthan, Vice President, Legal Services Creative Technology is a prestigious household name in the technology sector, offering leading solutions to creative and technical challenges faced by companies large and small worldwide. Found in 1980, Creative Technology has constantly evolved with the times to retain companies like General Electric, IBM, General Motors and their advertising agencies as their clients for over 30 years. Creative Technology is an active user of WIPO’s suite of IP services, such as the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system for patents, and the Madrid system for trade marks. In particular, Creative Technology has an extensive history of using the PCT system to protect their ground-breaking innovations in audio-visual technology in a number of key markets. Over the past 20 years, Creative Technology has lodged more than 200 applications, as they actively and strategically manage their valuable IP assets to extract maximum value from them. Judging Criteria IPOS partnered the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and launched the WIPO-IPOS IP Awards in 2013 during IP Week @ SG. The Awards, given out annually, seek to honour excellence in innovation and creativity, by recognising outstanding organisations in Singapore which leverage on their IP successfully and are role models for other organisations in their industries to emulate. The winners of the below-mentioned awards were selected based on the following criteria by the judging panels listed below: Award: IPOS Award for Design Innovation This award is given in recognition of an organisation’s successful efforts in developing a competitive edge through a registered design or registered designs. Judging Criteria: Design must be registered with IPOS Design must be innovative Design must serve or enhance the purpose of the product and provide downstream benefits for users of the design Design must be integral to the organisation’s business model and marketing strategies Design must enable business growth Design must have a positive impact on the organisation’s revenue or cost Design must enhance the organisation’s business competitiveness Design must significantly improve the quality of life or well-being of society, or enable the protection of the environment and promote sustainable development Design must be exemplary and inspire other creators and innovators to emulate the organisation’s success Panel of Judges: 1) Mr Low Cheaw Hwei Vice President, Global Head of Product and Service Design Head of Design, Asia Philips Design 2) Mr Tai Lee Siang President, Design Business Chamber Singapore 3) Mr Eric Teo Chairman, Institute of Valuers and Appraisers of Singapore (IVAS) Work Group Award: IPOS Award for Technology Patent This award serves to recognise a company which has developed a competitive edge using patented technologies. Judging Criteria: Patent must be granted and filed with IPOS. WIPO Users’ Trophy The WIPO Users’ Trophy is awarded to a particular user of WIPO’s IP services. These services include the Patent Cooperation Treaty System (for patents), the Madrid System (for trade marks), the Hague System (for registered designs) and the Lisbon System (appellations of origin), together with the services of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center. The Trophy recognises the early adoption or innovative use of these services. The WIPO Users’ Trophy is awarded solely at the discretion of WIPO.
