Prefixes and Base Words
Teaching
Breaking a word into its parts can help you figure out its meaning. Two important
word parts are prefixes, which are attached to the beginning of a word, and base
words, words that can stand alone. The example below shows how a prefix can
change the meaning of a word.
prefix that means “not”

what you know about prefixes, base words, and context clues. Use a dictionary to
check your answers.
Lenore was rarely irresponsible. However, one day she decided to explore the
basement of her house. Her parents discouraged her from going down there
because it was unsafe. The incomplete, unstable floor was home to many
unwelcome pests. Lenore disliked the thought of running into spiders and
snakes, but decided that being afraid was immature and illogical. She set out
on her adventure. She made just one misstep, but that was enough. What do
you think happened to her?
