Objectives:
Identify examples of each of the metric prefixes.
Use the correct base units

Differentiation:
Students without a cellphone or camera will need to work with one that
does.
Advanced students will find multiple examples of each prefix,
Preparing Students
for the Lesson:
 Transitions
 Expected
Behaviors
Review the prefixes Mili-Kilo
Explain that the goal of this lesson is to find examples of each prefix, and
that this will be homework.
Teaching the Lesson
(Lesson Sequence/
Activities):
After reviewing the prefixes, show an example of finding an example of an
object that best shows what a meter is. Then, take a photo of this object, and
a second photo of the object while next to the meter stick.

Motivation/
Anticipatory Set
Students will be motivated by being allowed to use their phones and present
their projects.

Pre-Assessment/
Activating
Background
Knowledge
This is a capstone type activity, allowing the student to demonstrate their
understanding of the metric system in the real world.

After they collect their photos (2 of each one with and one without the
measuring tool) they will then present their findings to the class. An
example final project may use PowerPoint, with one slide showing the
object, and the next slide showing the object with the measuring tool. The
object is, when they present to the class, the class can “guess” what prefix

Notes & Reflections:
This will be started in class, with the students thinking about what examples
they wish to use, then most of the data collection will need to be done as
homework. Assigning this on a Friday and having the photos due on a
Monday would be helpful.
Students will be graded on the final project. Do they have at least one
example of each prefix? Do they have at least 2 examples of each base?
Was their final project assembled and shown accurately?
