Greek Mythology Webquest Introduction This webquest will take 12th graders on a journey exploring the facets of Greek Mythology. Students will embark on 4 quests, studying these concepts: Greek Myths and their purpose; Creation Myth; Gods and Goddesses The Iliad and the Trojan Horse Greek Heroes The Life of Ulysses During each section, students will encounter guiding question to answer as a group. Students will work in groups of two or three and will navigate through suggested websites to find answers to these questions. This information will provide a strong background and foundation for the readings in class. When this nine week course is completed, the student will not only be a Greek Mythology expert, but also skilled in web research. TASK ONE—GREEK MYTH AND CREATION STORY Here are some resources to get you started: 1. Greek Mythology Link (highly recommended) - This site is the most thorough website on Greek Mythology. You can get specific information on Hera and Zeus and lots of Greek cities. This is where the Mr. Marassa did much of his research. 2. Greek Mythology Overview - This site contains a comparison of the Greek and Roman names, and a list of the immortals, with a biography about each. 3. Illustrated Encyclopedia of Greek Mythology - Click on a letter and an entry and read a biography, some long and some short. 4. www.geocities.com/Athens/oracle/5545/index.html - This is a website about different mythology characters. In this website you will learn about everything, heroes, titans, Olympians, Nymphs, Mystical creatures, and much more. 5. www.desy.de/gna/interpedia/greek_myth/greek_myth.html This website is a great introduction to all of Greek Mythology. It has everything from the stories of it and magical creatures and heroes. This website gathers info from other sources of mythology. 6. www.angelfire.com/mt/ahsb - This website was put together by people of the 8th to 10th grades so that young people can understand what it says. It contains sections on Gods and Heroes and the "other section" which is the bulkiest part of the site. It talks about the different mythological Heroes, and stories. It explains the difference between Greek and Roman Mythology. 7. www.mythweb.com/hercules/ - This website tells you about Hercules and his labors. You can read it in Spanish and in English. 8. http://entrenet.com/~groedmed/greekm/mythmino.html - This website describes the minotaur. It lets people know about all it's adventures and more. 9. http://eacwc.evansville.edu/quizzes/grade.cgi?greekmyth.html This is a great quiz to test you on your knowledge about Greek mythology. It covers many things on the mythology. 10. http://library.thinkquest.org/18650/data/stars/stars.html - This tells about the 50 constellations which came from Greek mythology and it explains all of them. 11. http://mythman.com/ - This website features a myth for every month They are: JanuaryAthena, February- Aphrodite, March- Zeus part I, April- Zeus part II, May- Hercules part I, June- Hercules part II, July- Hercules part III, August- Golden Fleece, September- Golden Fleece II, October- Golden Fleece III, November- Trojan War part I, and December-Trojan War part II. It also has full stories on many Greek Mythology gods, and a homework part to help kids with their projects. That part is sorted into categories like Major Olympian gods, Minor Greek gods, Greek Heroes, love stories, and Beasts and Creatures. 12. http://www.phanes.com/stamyt.html -This website features the star myths of Greek and Roman Mythology. Like how the constellations were formed and that kind of thing. The website also has pictures of the North and South Constellations, and a picture of Atlas holding the world above his head. It also has links to astronomy websites, and websites about the constellations. 13. http://www.pantheon.org/mythica/areas/greek_heroic/ -This website has a complete set of all Hero's and Greek Mythology Characters in alphabetical order. Ithas the full story of all of them and much more information like what their name means and how to pronounce it, and other little bits of other information about them. 14. http://www.geocities.com/hestia624/ This website has information about some of the Greek Mythology Characters. It has a lot of stories and pictures about Greek gods, goddesses, lovers of Zeus, Nymphs, and a lot more in a character index. 15. http://www.greekmythology.com - This website has a lot of information about Greek Mythology history. It also has a lot of pictures of the Characters, and a family tree of the start of Greek Mythology. This site is a very large site containing 9 branches of important things that happened in Greek history. You can learn about any god or goddess, creatures, myths, the titans, and much more. You can research many places on where historic events occurred. 16. http://web.uvic.ca/grs/bowman/myth/ - This website was made by a student in a university in Canada. The website includes images and information about a lot of Greek gods. The website also has background music. You can see what contenders won and were rewarded. 22. http://classics.mit.edu/odyssey/ - It has the complete book. It has a commentary. It has a link to a reader recommendation site. It explains a little bit of the Odyssey. 23. http://www.temple.edu/odyssey/html -This site is a big study guide. It has a table of contents. It explains the book in detail. This site is made by Robin Mitchell Boyask. 24. http://www.1dragonet.es/users/markbckilhomer.html - This site depicts the Odyssey in great detail. It sells the book. Answer the following: You may work independently, or in small groups of no more than three. Each student must turn in a response. 1. How was the world created, according to Greek Mythology? 2. Who were the Titans, and name at least 3? 3. How did a war begin between the Titans and Zeus? 4. How was the world divided after the war? 5. Name and briefly describe (2-3 sentences) 6 major Greek Gods. Describe powers, personality, allies, etc. TASK TWO—THE ILIAD AND THE TROJAN HORSE 1. Who is Eris and why is she important to the beginnings of the Trojan War. 2. Which Gods were for the Trojans, and which were for the Greeks or Hellenes? 3. How was Helen lured away to Troy? 4. What role did Ulysses have in the Trojan War? 5. Research what roles Ajax and Achilles had in the war and explain in a brief paragraph for each. TASK THREE—GREEK HEROES 1. Name and explain at least 4 characteristics of a Greek Hero 2 - 4. Name three Greek Heroes and give a 2-3 sentence biography of each. 6. Which of these 3 heroes are the most heroic. Explain your response. TASK FOUR—ODYSSEUS (ULYSSES) AND THE ODYSSEY 1. What is Odysseus's parentage - find his family tree and draw at least two generations of it. 2. Why is Poseidon so biased against Ulysses? 3. Why is Athena loyal to Ulysses? 4. Describe the abilities / powers of Circe and Calypso. 5. What heroic qualities does Ulysses hold?
