Endangered Animals Alphabet book By : Carmen Thayer A Alligator Snapping Turtle They live in lakes and rivers in the southern USA. Alligator Snapping Turtles eat fish, frogs, crabs, and shellfish. The Alligator Snapping Turtle spends most of its life in the water. It can stay under water for 40 to 50 minutes. Tortoise Shell: 80cm max. B Blue Bird-of-paradise The male Blue Bird-of-paradise is known for its beautiful appearance. Body length: 30 cm Blue Birds-of-paradise are found only in the mountains of Papua, New Guinea. The Blue Bird-of-paradise likes to eat fruits. They also eat insects like grasshoppers and crickets. Unfortunately, the beauty of the Blue Bird-of-paradise attracts humans as well as female blue birds. Their numbers are believed to have dropped due to their being hunted for trophies. C Chinese Alligator The Chinese Alligator lives in swamps and ponds in the lower basin of the Yangtze River. Total length: 1.5m (Max. 2m) They like to eat pond snails and other shellfish. They may also catch fish and birds. The Chinese Alligator may grow to two meters in length, but it does not attack humans. E European Mink The European Mink lives in areas such as Russia, France, Spain, Ukraine, and Estonia. Body length: Male 28 to 43 cm/Female: 32 to 40cm The European Mink likes the waterside and is a skilled swimmer. They eat rodents like voles and muskrats, as well as crab and fish. They have webbed feet and catch most of their food underwater. F Fishing cat Unlike most cats, the Fishing Cat is a good swimmer. The Hokuriku Salamander was first discovered in the 1970s. They are rare and difficult to find because they are nocturnal. Body length: Male 10.8 cm I Indri The Indri lives only on Madagascar. The Indri eats tree leaves, sprouts, flowers, and fruits. Sometimes they also come down from their trees and eat the soil. The Indri has a loud cry that can be heard three kilometers away. The Indri is a member of the monkey family. J Jambu Fruit Dove The Jambu Fruit Dove is a plump, small-headed bird with soft feathers and very distinctive coloring. The female builds a flimsy nest of twigs, roots and grasses. It lays one or sometimes two white eggs which are incubated for about 20 days. Unlike other geckos, it can close its eyelids L Long-beaked Echidna The Long-beaked Echidna is a rare type of mammal that lays eggs. The Long-beaked Echidna lives only on the island of New Guinea. The Long-beaked Echidna uses its long narrow beak to slurp worms, its favorite food. They also catch insects as well. Before the Long-beaked Echidna mother lays her eggs, she develops a pouch inside her stomach. Body length: 45-77.5cm M Mariana Flying Fox Body Length: 17-23cm Mariana Flying Foxes only live in Guam and the Mariana Islands. Mariana Flying Foxes eat fruit and flowers. During the day, Mariana Flying Foxes like hang upside down on trees to take a nap. Mariana Flying Fox is famous for its delicious meat. N Nubian Ibex Body length: 140150cm They live in the mountainous desert areas of the Arabian Peninsula. The Nubian Ibex eats grasses, leaf buds, and leaves. The male Nubian Ibex is well known for its large horns There are small horns on the female. O Okinawa Woodpecker Total length: 31cm The Okinawa Woodpecker lives only in the so-called "Yanbaru" forests in the northern part of the main island of Okinawa. The Okinawa Woodpecker captures and eats insects and spiders on the ground and in trees. The Okinawa Woodpecker is a member of the woodpecker family.
