Polytheism
•  Multiple gods!
•  Their stories help to outline Greek history
•  The gods live on Mount Olympus and often come
down to interact with humans
•  Sometimes referred to as “Hellenism”

•  The King of the Gods on Mount
Olympus
•  The God of the Sky and Thunder
(his symbol is often a lightning bolt)
•  The son of Cronus (whom he
killed)
•  Married to Hera
•  Father of Athena, Apollo, Artemis,

•  Daughter of Zeus, twin sister of
Apollo
•  Helped her mother give birth
(after her own birth) for 9 days!
•  Goddess of the hunt, wild
animals, wilderness, childbirth,
and the protector of girls
•  Often depicted with a bow and
arrow

•  Daughter of Zeus (born from his
forehead in full battle attire)
•  Goddess of wisdom, courage,
inspiration, civilization, law and
justice, math, strength, war
strategy, and arts.
•  The namesake of the city of
Athens, won the city by giving
the Greeks the olive tree
•  Also protected Sparta

•  Goddess of love, beauty and
procreation
•  Considered the most beautiful

an individual with uncontrollable
love
Stolen by the Romans!
•  When the Romans invaded Greece in 146 BC,
they adopted and renamed many of the Greek
gods
•  Zeus = Jupiter
•  Hera = Juno
•  Poseidon = Neptune
•  Aphrodite = Venus
•  Athena = Diana
•  Hades = Pluto
