A Magical Animal - Unit 2 Worksheets - Reader 8 More Reading Worksheet 1a Manatees Manatees are large, largely herbivorous marine mammals also known as sea cows. There are three species of manatees: the Amazonian manatee (Trichechus inunguis), the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) and the West African manatee (Trichechus senegalensis). They measure up to 3.6 metres (12 ft), and have paddle-like flippers. The word ‘manatí’ comes from the people of the Caribbean. In countries around the world, many dangers claim the lives of these gentle animals. They are hunted for meat, trapped in fishing nets and chased out of their habitat. In some countries, such as Jamaica, scientists say manatees could soon become extinct. Manatees demonstrate complex discrimination and learning ability similar to dolphins. On average, manatees swim at about 5 to 8 kilometres per hour (3.1 to 5.0 mph). However, they have been known to swim at up to 30 kilometres per hour (19 mph) in short bursts. Manatees are generally solitary creatures; half a manatee’s day is spent sleeping in the water, surfacing for air at regular intervals. At other times, they feed in shallow waters at depths of 1–2 metres (3.3 – 6.6 ft). They have been known to live up to 60 years.
