Create a 1920s magazine
Task
Your job is to create a magazine covering aspects of
culture, politics, the arts, music, and lifestyles from the
1920's. You will create this magazine in a group of four,
each person working to create a product that is reflective
of the time period. Your magazine will be published in
the classroom and should reflect the 1920s as much as
possible. In the course of your project, you will mimic a
magazine's content and style, making a 1920's edition that
mimics that magazine's format.

Magazine requirements:
1. First, choose a magazine format which you will imitate. After analysing the current
magazine's format and describing the relevant style and content of the magazine's
creators and the typical reader, you will create a magazine that mimics that
format. You could choose from one of the following (most of these magazines did
not exist in the 1920s, but we are more concerned with their format):

Heat

Vogue

Time

Radio Times
2. You will then create a magazine with the following components:
a. A cover page (lead story, picture, title of magazine, editors/contributors,
& date)
b. Table of contents (this has to be created last)
c. Four features or news articles. Articles must be written as if they could be
in your model magazine during the 1920s (e.g. in a 1920s issue of Time).
Each group member is responsible for one. They can be about any
significant event, trend or development during the 1920s.
d. Four supplementary pieces for the magazine. Each group member is
responsible for one of the following: a graphic (map, chart, etc. with
contextual explanation), an advertisement (by private organisation or the
government), a letter to the editor − on a current controversial issue, a
political cartoon (created, not copied!).

Create a 1920s magazine
Your articles should correspond to the date of your magazine and have some perspective
of time. For instance, if your magazine is written in 1927, you cannot write about the
stock market crash of 1929, and any articles about Babe Ruth should either be about the
glorious 1927 season or retrospectives about his still vibrant career.
Group roles

Leader/Editor:
This individual is in charge of organising the final product, be it on paper, a
PowerPoint presentation, etc. They should make sure that the project meets the
standards set out above, plus any extras stipulated by the group.

Recorder/Secretary:
This person takes notes whenever the group meets and keeps track of group
data/sources/etc. This person distributes these notes to the rest of the group
highlighting sections relevant for their parts of the project.

Checker:
Someone needs to double-check data, bibliographic sources, or graphics for
accuracy and correctness.

Spokesperson/Press Secretary/Webmaster:
This person is responsible for the technical details of the final product and should
be ready to summarise the group's progress and findings to the teacher and to
other groups.
