PROCLAMATION
Proclamation
P-1989-8
WHEREAS, Memorial Day has always been a special
holiday in Beaufort, South Carolina, for historic and
commemorative reasons; and
WHEREAS, this-has been especially true for the black
community of Beaufort, since it was on the Sea Islandsthat the first regiment of black Union soldiers was
raised by the United States Army in the Civil War, and
WHEREAS, Memorial Day 1989, Monday, May 29, is
especially noteworthy due to the reburial of nineteen
black Union soldiers of the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer
Regiment whose remains were found on Folly Island in 1987
where they had been buried during the winter of 18631864; and
WHEREAS, the reburial service for the nineteen Union
soldiers will be held in the United States National
Cemetery where almost two thousand other USCT soldier
dead are buried; and
WHEREAS, the City and County of Beaufort will be
honored by a Massachusetts delegation, including the
Governor of that State, Michael Dukakis.
NOW, THEREFORE, Beaufort County Council declares May
29, 1989, to be a special day of remembrance for those
who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, as
well as a day of dedication to those principles of
liberty and the pursuit of happiness which have made this
a great country.
