Use the following “clues” to help you determine what words you will be finding in your word search. Each clue relates to
the three parts of the cell theory, eukaryotic cell structures, or to a comparison between plant and animal cells. The
word which fills in a blank may be found in the word search.
Part 1 :The Cell Theory
1. All ___________________ things are made up of one or more cells.
2. A cell is the basic unit of structure and function in living things. It performs all of the functions necessary for
________________.
3. Cells can only be made from other _____________________.
Part 2: Eukaryotic Cell Structures
4. ______________________________ are either found floating in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic
reticulum. These structures are like factories for making proteins because they are the site of protein synthesis.
Found in both prokaryotic AND eukaryotic cells.
5. ______________________________ is the jelly-like fluid found inside of the cell. This material holds the
organelles of the cell in place. Found in both prokaryotic AND eukaryotic cells.
6. ______________________________ are the “powerhouses” of the cell. The structures make energy available
for the cell. Found in eukaryotic cells only.
7. ______________________________ contain chemicals known as enzymes which are used to break down
materials in the cell. These structures break down large food particles, old cell parts, and “rejected” proteins.
These structures are small and round and are part of the cells clean-up crew. Found in animal cells.
8. ______________________________ are storage areas for the cell. They store water, food, waste, and other
materials. Plant cells usually have one large central organelle. Animal cells have only a few to none at all.
9. All cells have ______________________________. This is a phospholipid bilayer that separates the cell from its
environment, and controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell. This layer allows food, oxygen,
water, and other nutrients to enter the cell and allows the cell’s waste to exit. Found in both eukaryotic AND
prokaryotic cells.
10. ______________________________ get proteins and other newly created materials packaged and ready for
distribution to other parts of the cell or to other cells. They look like flattened sacs and tubes. Smaller transport
vesicles pinch off from these structures. Found in eukaryotic cells.
11. ______________________________ transports proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to
another. It is often attached to the outside of the nucleus. Can be “rough” or “smooth” depending upon if
ribosomes are attached. Found in eukaryotic cells.
12. ______________________________ controls the cell’s activity, making it like the “brain” of the cell. DNA is
found in this structure and contains the instructions for building proteins. Found in eukaryotic cells only.
Part Three: How are Plant Cells different from Animal Cells?
13. Plant cells contain a large central vacuole used for storing mostly ___________________________.
14. Plants contain organelles known as ____________________________ which are the site of photosynthesis.
15. Plant cells and bacteria cells are covered with a structure known as the cell _____________________. This
structure provides support and protection for the cell.
