THREE BASIC RULES OF LOVE AND LOGIC
Use enforceable limits
Provide choices within limits
Apply consequences with empathy
MYTHS TO DISPEL
1.
Students must be warned in advance of the consequences for
violating rules.
2.
When students break the rules, consequences must follow
immediately.
3.
It is not necessary for students to like their teachers. However,
they should respect them.
LOVE AND LOGIC PEARLS OF WISDOM
FOR TEACHERS
Saying the following to a student gives you the opportunity to model a good
response to any critique you might get as a result of the question: "We've been
around each other a lot, and I'm wondering if anything I do gets on your nerves. If
so, I'd really like to know."
Sending students in the emotional state to a new location gives them the
underlying message that they are capable of handling their situation on their own.
When they state the standards themselves, students do better than when
they simply listen to you lay down the law.
When a student's or a teacher's need is unspoken, there is fertile ground for
resentment.
Oracles don't issue orders; they share wisdom.
Shift your thinking from, "What do I say?" to "What do I ask?"
Although many of us act as if the opposite were true, achievement is more
important than winning a power struggle.
Students base their behavior on the examples set by the adults in their lives.
No behavior technique will have a lasting, positive result if it is not delivered
with compassion, empathy, or understanding.
Students need to learn to think. By giving them practice at thinking, teachers
not only gain more control over the classroom, but also model the joy of relearning.
Those who believe it cannot be done need to get out of the way of those who
are doing it.
Great teachers are terminally curious and have a penchant for life-long
learning.
You are either doing it the Love and Logic way, or you are doing it the reward
and punishment way.
Education is based on a relationship, not a procedure
Understanding the Attachment Disordered
Child in School
Children with disorders of attachment commonly present with:
•
Physiological disregulation
•
Learning deficits
•
Impaired social relationships
These children may appear to be:
•
Disrespectful
•
Resistant
•
Lazy
•
Cruel to other children
•
Impossible to manage
Important Points to Remember
•
Children with attachment disorder are "frozen" at the preschool
state of development
•
They will not be able to process multiple directives.
•
They will not do well in large groups.
•
Much of the oppositional behavior is really a "cover" for disability.
•
Children with attachment disorder do not usually respond to
"behavior modification" techniques.
