Tax Refunds
We constantly hear about what a terrible job most people are
doing to prepare for their retirement. Sure, there are plenty of
other priorities for the money they earn on the job than putting
funds away to support their lifestyle 30, 40 or 50 years down the
road.
One of my real pet peeves is the people who celebrate getting a
tax refund. They act like it is free money from Uncle Sam. In fact,
they have loaned the money to the government, interest-free,
for a year.
Assume a tax refund of $2,400, about average for the past year.
That works out to $200 a month where you overpaid your taxes.
If, instead, you had contributed that money to your company’s
401(k) retirement plan or some other program the money would
be working for you and there’s even a chance your employer
would match a portion of your contribution.
I also stumbled across another report on how you can save big
bucks. A student at Oxford University suggested if you pass on
just one of your favorite morning lattes and instead invested
the money you would build a rather hefty nest egg. The study
found if you invested $3.19 every day and put the money into
an account compounding at six percent for 50 years, you would
wind up with $337,942.69.
There are lots of other ways to save but they all require
discipline. We challenge you to find a new way to save and
implement it this month!
