World War II in Europe,
1942–1945
When the United States entered the war in late 1941, the war had been
raging for two years. Germany had formed an alliance with Italy and
Japan called the Axis Powers. The Axis Powers had attacked and invaded
several European countries. The United States joined the Allied Powers
in fighting the Axis Powers. By May 1945, the Allies were successful and
the war in Europe was over. Study the map below and answer the questions that follow.
