 Remember: uneven heating of the Earth creates
differences in air pressure.

 The uneven heating of the earth creating
differences in air pressure creates global winds.
 At the poles: indirect solar energy; cold temps;
high pressure
 air sinks and moves towards the equator.
 At the equator: direct solar energy; hotter than
the rest of the Earth; low pressure
 air rises and moves towards the poles.
 The circular movement is called a convection
current.

 Causes air from adjacent areas to move toward
the equator
 This movement begins a chain reaction of air
movement throughout Earth, creating 6 wind
belts.

Complex Movement of Global Winds
 It’s not as simple as one global wind
convection current in each the northern &
southern hemisphere. WHY?
 Earth’s rotation affects wind direction.
 The influence of the Earth’s rotation on the
movement of air and water is called the
Coriolis Effect.

 As Earth spins, anything moving in a straight
line from North to South will be deflected
sideways.
 In the Northern Hemisphere, winds,
water, and other fluids will
be deflected to the
right at a 90o angle or
clockwise

In the Southern
Hemisphere, everything
will be deflected to the left
at a 90o angle or
counterclockwise
