Overview
Oracle 9i Discoverer is a tool which allows
users to query an Oracle database. It is
an ad-hoc query, reporting, analysis, and
Web publishing tool. It can be used for a
variety of tasks including data exporting,
sorting and grouping data, creating charts
and graphs, and printing reports.
Discoverer workbooks can be saved and
shared with others.
Key Terms
Business Area
Set of folders containing information with
a common business purpose.
Folder
Group of related information within a
business area (typically a table or view).
Item
Specific type of information within a
folder. Axis Item—corresponds to a
column in a table. Measure Item—axis
item that represents numeric data.
Query
To search for information. A saved search
which extracts information from multiple
tables. Each query is stored in a separate
worksheet.
View
Data the user has access to which is set up
by the Discoverer administrator. The
Banner schema, describing views, is
available at http://banner.rowan.edu/
banner-schema/
Workbook
A related group of worksheets that are
related to each other. Holds one or more
queries.
Worksheet
A document that stores the results of a
query.

Connect to Database (Personal Computer)
1. Open Oracle Discoverer Desktop.
Macintosh users see next page.
2. Complete login and select Connect
(Figure A).

The Username and Password are the
same as your Internet Native Banner
login. Enter the database name
provided to you by the Discoverer
administrator.

Connect to Database (Macintosh)
Discoverer Desktop is not available for
Macintosh users. Please use Discoverer
Plus. The instructions throughout this
workbook are also applicable to Discoverer
Plus.
1. Open web browser.
2. Go to http://admin4.rowan.edu:7780/
discoverer/plus

If no connection is available, choose
Create Connection, complete the connection details (Figure C), and select
Apply.

Enter password and select Connect.

Open Existing Workbook
1. Select Open an existing workbook
(Figure D).
2. Select where to retrieve the workbook.
Recommend workbooks saved to
Database.
3. Choose workbook to open and select
OK.

4. If opening a shared workbook,
Workbook in Other Database
Account window appears (Figure E).
Select appropriate option to open and
choose OK.
5. Choose Yes to run the query when
opening workbook. Choose No to open
a blank workbook (Figure F).

To always run query automatically
when opening workbook, select
Options from Tools menu, choose the
General tab, select Run Query Automatically, and choose OK.

Create New Workbook
Create New Workbook
1. Select Create a new workbook
You can only have one workbook open
at a time in the window. If a workbook
is already open select New from File
menu. Multiple windows can be open
simultaneously.
2. Choose how you want the data
displayed (Figure G). Select Next to
continue.

3. Select folder and/or individual fields to
include in worksheet query
(Figure H). Select Finish.
You can only select data from the business area and folders that you have
been granted access to. If you need
access to additional data please contact
the Discoverer administrator.
Joins, or links, to folders and
fields within folders are set by the
Discoverer administrator. The folder
or field name will turn grey if you can
not select it. If you wish to join folders
contact the Discoverer administrator.

Manage Workbook
Save Workbook
1. Select Save from File menu
(Figure I).

Only query definitions and formatting
are saved, not the query results. Each
time you open the workbook the query
will run to collect the most recent data.
2. Select where to save the workbook
(Figure J). Recommend all workbooks
saved to Database.
3. Enter workbook name and select Save.
Share Workbook
1. Select Manage Workbooks from File
menu.

2. Select Sharing from Manage
Workbooks submenu. You must first
save a workbook before sharing options
are available.
3. Select the workbook name from the
drop down selection, choose the users
you want to share your workbook with
by selecting Add (Figure K).
4. Choose OK to share.
The users you select to share your
workbook must also have access to the
data fields granted by the Discoverer
administrator.

Manage Workbook
Delete Workbook
1. Select Manage Workbooks from File
menu.
2. Select Delete from Manage Workbooks
submenu.
3. Select workbook and choose Delete
(Figure L).
The workbook remains open on the
screen until the program is closed or
another workbook is opened. If you
chose not to delete the workbook, select
Save from the file menu before closing.

Add New Worksheet to
Existing Workbook
1. Select New Sheet from Sheet menu
(Figure M).
2. Choose how you want the data
displayed (Figure N). Select Next to
continue.

Manage Worksheet
Rename Worksheet
1. Select worksheet tab (Figure P).
2. Select Rename Sheet from Sheet
menu or double-click on worksheet tab.

3. Enter worksheet name and select OK
(Figure Q).
Move Worksheet
1. Click and hold worksheet tab
(Figure P).

2. While holding, drag worksheet tab to
desired location and release hold.
Delete Worksheet
1. Select worksheet tab (Figure P).
2. Select Delete Sheet from Sheet menu
(Figure R) or right-click on worksheet
tab and select Delete Sheet.

3. Choose Yes to delete worksheet.
A workbook must have at least
one worksheet. If you only have

Export
Export Data
1. Select Export from File menu
(Figure S).
2. Select what data you wish to export
such as current sheet, all sheets, or a
selection (Figure T).
To export selected data you must
first select it before beginning.

3. Choose the export format (Figure T).
Select Microsoft Excel Workbook
(.xls) when exporting all sheets.
The exported data will then be organized by corresponding sheet.
4. Select Browse to save file to your H:
drive, 'Nwuser7\Home7\Employees',
(Figure T) and select Finish.

WARNING: If you do not select a
location to save, it will default to your
C: drive which is not backed up!
Once the data is exported it is no
longer linked to the database and will
not refresh when changes are made.

Print
Print Worksheet
1. Select Print from File menu.
2. Choose to print selected sheet or all
sheets (Figure U).
3. Indicate print rage.
4. Note number of copies to print.

Help
1. Select Help Topics from Help menu.
2. Enter key word to search (Figure V).
3. Select a matching word, if applicable.
4. Click on a specific topic and choose
Display.
