PHARMACY TECHINICIAN PROGRAM:
A Phlebotomy Technician is a key member of the medical laboratory
team whose primary function is the collection of blood samples from
patients by venipuncture or microtechiniques.” ~American Medical Technologists
What Pharmacy Technicians Do: Pharmacy technicians help licensed
pharmacists dispense prescription medication to customers or health
professionals.

Work Environment: Pharmacy technicians work in pharmacies, including those found in grocery and drug stores, and in hospitals. Most work
full time, but many work part time.

Job Outlook: Employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow

CTI’s Phlebotomy Technician Program is structured in a learningeffective 50% theory / 50% hands-on method. Upon successful
completion of CTI’s Phlebotomy Program, students will:
This ONLINE program will prepare students to enter the pharmacy
field and to pursue certification including the Pharmacy Technician
Certification Board’s PTCB exam. This course covers the following
key areas and topics:
4Be familiar with commonly used medical terminology related to phlebotomy
4Understand the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system
4Be aware of the legal issues related to blood collection procedures & patient care.
4Be familiar with blood collection equipment and procedures
4Successfully obtain blood through various blood collection procedures
4Understand the procedure for arterial blood collection
4Be familiar with complications and procedural errors
4Know about infection control, safety and first aid
4Pharmacy calculations
4 terminology specific to the pharmacy
4Skills to read and interpret prescriptions
4Review of the top 200 drugs
4Skills to identify drugs by generic and brand names
4Dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, and dose conversions
4Dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control, and billing and reimbursement
4Education and Certifications
All Phlebotomists must be CERTIFIED through the Department
of Health Services, Laboratory Field Services Division in order to
maintain employment as a Phlebotomist.
(Effective April 9, 2003, all persons performing phlebotomy who are not doctors, nurses,
or clinical lab scientists, must be certified as a phlebotomist before they can draw blood.)

STATE CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
THE MILITARY SPOUSE CAREER ADVANCEMENT ACCOUNTS
4Attend a phlebotomy training program that has been approved by the State’s
Laboratory Field Services Department.
4Complete a minimum of 40 hours of clinical training at a State-Approved lab.
(CTI requires 64 Hours didactic training, 40 Hours clinical training at a StateApproved Lab, 50 venipunctures, 10 skin punctures)*
4Pass a written certification exam from an organization approved by the
California Department of Health Services.
4State Application Fee $100
Once you have passed the National certification exam, you must submit
the following to the State for certification:
4High School Transcript or GED 4CTI Certificate4AMT Test Results ($120
Testing Fee)
*Proof of Clinical Hours Completed(California statute requires that students successfully completing a course of study be awarded the appropriate diploma or certificate. Graduates of CTI
courses are awarded a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the program.
