I. What is Cellular Respiration? Cellular Respiration is a series of chemical reactions that transforms the energy in food molecules to usable energy. Mitochondria: organelle where energy is made. II. What is are the three steps in cellular respiration? 1.The first step in called Glycolysis which takes place in the cytoplasm. This breaks down glucose molecules made during photosynthesis into smaller molecules releasing electrons. 2. The second step takes place in the mitochondria and the smaller molecules are broken down into carbon dioxide and more electrons are released. 3. The third step requires the presence of oxygen made during photosynthesis and uses the electrons produced to release large amounts of energy called ATP. III. What is the chemical equation for cellular respiration? + ATP IV. What is Fermentation? Fermentation is a chemical process that release energy from food molecules; it begins and ends in the cytoplasm and does not involve mitochondria or use oxygen! That’s the difference with cellular respiration! Lactic Acid Fermentation • This takes place in our muscles and this process releases energy from glucose and produce lactic acid and carbon dioxide as waste. • Cheese and yogurt are made from this process! Alcohol Fermentation This takes place in yeast cells (Fungi) and it produces ethanol (alcohol) instead of lactic acid, but it also produces carbon dioxide.
