Digestion Post Lab Activity Lab Title: Digestion Lab Grade: 5 Lab Description: The students will know the sequential steps of digestion and the roles of teeth and the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine in the function of the digestive system. Objective/ Standard: Science: 2c. Plants and animals have structures for respiration, digestion, waste disposal and transportation of materials. As a basis for understanding this concept, students will know: the sequential steps of digestion, and the roles of teeth and mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and colon in the function of the digestive system. ELD Standard: Retells and Summarizes-Retell (The students.) Retell stories and talk about school related activities using expanded vocabulary, descriptive words and paraphrasing. 1. 2. 3. 4. Steps: Pre-lessonCreate and copy a Digestion cadence to a large sheet of butcher paper. Hang it up for all to see. Make a copy of the cadence for each student to read. Practice at the beginning of the science lesson by: Having the students march in-place, the teacher says a line and the kids repeat, the teacher says “sound off”, and the students say the word that follows. Post-Lesson: Team Jigsaw1. Expert groups. Divide class into groups of four members. Each group becomes an expert on one part of the digestion system. 2. Learning Groups. Re-group class, so that new working groups are formed. Each new group consists of one member from each of the expert groups. Each member of a Learning group is an expert on one of the topics to be studied. 3. Each member shares her/his information with the other group members. The objectives are that all Learning Group members will learn the information from an “expert”. Pre Activity Digestion 05/06 HOL Questions: 1. Do students know what digestion is? 2. Do students know the names of the digestion parts? 3. Do students understand that not all animals' digestion parts are alike? Assessment/checking for understanding: 1. Compare and contrast the hydra and a human digestive system using a Venn Diagram. 2. Process Grid 3. Sentence Patterning Activity Extension: 1. Student poetry writing activity. 2. Picturing identification seeking student's meaningful thoughts. 3. Rotating Review activity on large pieces of butcher paper. 4. Have the students write a letter of thanks/of understanding to HOL interns and professors. Materials: Human and Hydra digestion tract outline for labeling, Expert group paragraph material, butcher paper, Venn Diagram sample, Process Grid outline, Sentence Patterning strips.
