(Teaching unit Optional) ERASMUS MUNDUS MASTER'S DEGREE IN ADVANCED MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (Syllabus 2014). (Teaching unit Optional) ECTS credits: 3 Teaching languages: Spanish Teaching staff Coordinator: Jimenez Piqué, Emilio Others: Jimenez Piqué, Emilio Degree competences to which the subject contributes Specific: CEMAT1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology and other natural sciences, obtained through study, experience and practice with critical thinking skills to develop viable solutions to technical problems. CEMAT4. Study for characterization, evaluation and certification of materials according to their applications. Learning objectives of the subject The aim of the course is that students acquire basic knowledge about the physical properties of materials. At the end of the course the student should be able to: ? Understand the basics of solid state physics ? Identify the main optical effects of materials and understand the interaction between light and materials ? Clasify materials according to their electrical behavior. Relate the macroscopic electrical behavior with the behavior of electrons in materials ? Differentiate between the different magnetic responses of materials. Identify the main magnetic parameters of ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic materials 1/4 Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Last update: 20-05-2016 240EM113 - Electrical, Magnetic, Optical and Thermal Properties of Materials Study load Total learning time: 75h Hours large group: 18h 24.00% Hours medium group: 0h 0.00% Hours small group: 9h 12.00% Guided activities: 0h 0.00% Self study: 48h 64.00% 2/4 Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya Last update: 20-05-2016 240EM113 - Electrical, Magnetic, Optical and Thermal Properties of Materials Content Introduction to Solid State Physics Learning time: 22h Theory classes: 8h Self study : 14h Description: The atom and the periodic table.
