3: Newton’s Third Law of Motion
Day 1:
Warm Up: Write something fun you did this weekend!
LT: I can explain Newton’s Third Law of Motion
Newton’s Cradle
THINK independently and then
DISCUSS with your group
1. What is happening?
2. Why is this happening?
3. What forces are working?
Newton’s
Third Law
For every action,
there is an equal
and opposite
reaction.

Action Force
- Initiating force (first force)
- Causes the reaction force
Ex1 : baseball hitting bat (action),
Ex2: Gymnast jumping off beam
FORCES ALWAYS COME IN
PAIRS!
Reaction Force
- Reacting force (second force)
- Responds to the action force
Ex1 : bat applying force on ball after the
ball hits it
Ex2: Beam exerting force on gymnast
FORCES ALWAYS COME IN PAIRS!
THERE IS ALWAYS A REACTION FORCE
EVEN IF IT ISN’T OBVIOUS
Which is the action and reaction force?
Bowling ball pushing over pin - Action
Pin pushing bowling ball - reaction
Ball pushes glove - action
Glove pushes ball - reaction
Which is the action and reaction force?
Answer:
1. Foot A - action, Ball - reaction
2. Foot C - action, Ball - reaction
Identify at least 6 pairs of action-reaction pairs in
the following diagram:

Day 2:
Warm Up: What is Newton’s Third Law
of Motion
LT: I can explain Newton’s Third Law of
Motion and give examples of
action-reaction pairs.
Review: Newton’s Third Law
For every action, there is an equal and
opposite reaction.

Work with your group to choose one example (check in with
Ms. P once you have picked), EXPLAIN and MODEL how your
chosen example shows Newton’s Third Law (use white

Day 3: Car Crashes + Test Review + Egg Drop
Warm Up: Write an example of an action-reaction pair and Newton’s Third Law of
Motion.
LT: I can use Newton’s Three laws to explain why the bobsled crashed.
Final Bobsled revision
Physics of a bobsled: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGbOP79EhT0
1. Revise your bobsled model
2. Write a CER about WHY the bobsled
crashed

Project: Egg Drop
Task: Design a container and parachute to carry a raw egg
to ground when dropped from 15 ft.
Goal: Slowest time and safest landing
Requirements: Work with your team, use only acceptable
materials, container must fit in backpack
Project: Egg Drop
Materials: see list on instructions, any other
materials must be approved by Ms. P...BRING
YOUR MATERIALS WITH YOU TO CLASS
Ms. P will provide egg on the day of the drop
(March 13)
Due Dates: Egg drop: March 13, Write up due:
March 14
Day 4-5: Egg Drop Work Days
Warm Up: What are some of the requirements for the egg drop project?
LT: I can work with a group to design a capsule that protects an egg from breaking
when it’s dropped.
