Roosevelt in 1902 coal strike achieved
wage settlement favorable to workers.
The commission was a precedent for
future government intervention on
behalf of labor.

1. Elkins Act (1903) barred shippers from
accepting rebated from railroads.
2. Hepburn Act (1906) permitted the
Interstate Commerce Commission to
establish rates based on its review of
railroad’s assets.
1. Meat Inspection Act (1906) provided
for government inspection and grading
of meat; helped eradicate animal diseases.
2. Pure Food and Drug Act (1906) prohibited misbranding (improper labeling)
and sale of adulterated foods and drugs
across state lines.
1. Roosevelt used executive authority to
protect vast areas of forest land.
2. Newland Reclamation Act (1902)
established fund to finance irrigation
projects.
3. Roosevelt fostered the setting up of
wildlife preserves.
