countriesfromtheNATOcountriesfromabout1945untiltheendoftheColdWarin1991.The
IronCurtainwasbothaphysicalandanideologicaldivisionthatrepresentedthewayEurope
wasviewedafterWorldWarII.TotheeastoftheIronCurtainwerethecountriesthatwere
connectedtoorinfluencedbytheformerSovietUnion.ThisincludedpartofGermany

TheMarshallPlan(officiallytheEuropeanRecoveryProgram,ERP)wastheAmericanprogram
toaidEuropewheretheUnitedStatesgavemonetarysupporttohelprebuildEuropean

TheplanwasinoperationforfouryearsbeginninginApril1948.ThegoalsoftheUnitedStates
weretorebuildawar-devastatedregion,removetradebarriers,modernizeindustry,andmake
Europeprosperousagain.

alliance.TheblockadewasasovietattempttostarveoutthealliesinBerlininordertogain

alliedresponsewasaunbelievablymassiveairsupply-flyingnightanddaytofeedthecity.

The1960U-2incidentoccurredduringtheColdWaron1May1960,duringthepresidencyof
DwightEisenhowerandduringtheleadershipofSovietPremierNikitaKhrushchev,whena
UnitedStatesU-2spyplanewasshotdownovertheairspaceoftheSovietUnion.TheUnited
Statesgovernmentatfirstdeniedtheplane'spurposeandmission,butthenwasforcedto
admititsroleasacovertsurveillanceaircraftwhentheSovietgovernmentproduceditsintact
remainsandsurvivingpilot.

TheBayOfPigsinvasionreferstotheCIAsponsoredAmericanattackoftheCubangovernment
inordertooverthrowFidelCastro.ItwasatrickyplantoexecuteasUSwasnotinwarwith
Cubathen.ThoughtheUSplannedtoappear“notbeinginvolved”inthisattackanddeclared
abouttheirnon-intentiontointerveneinCubanaffairs,CubahadalreadyapproachedtheUN
withthefactsabouttheUStrainingmercenariesforthisplannedinvasion.

fleeingtotheWest.

TheCubanMissileCrisiswastheclosesttheworldevercametonuclearwar.TheUnitedStates
armedforceswereattheirhigheststateofreadinesseverandSovietfieldcommandersinCuba
werepreparedtousebattlefieldnuclearweaponstodefendtheislandifitwasinvaded.Luckily,
thankstothebraveryoftwomen,PresidentJohnF.KennedyandPremierNikitaKhrushchev,
warwasaverted.

hefalloftheBerlinWallhappenednearlyassuddenlyasitsrise.Therehadbeensignsthatthe
Communistblocwasweakening,buttheEastGermanCommunistleadersinsistedthatEast
Germanyjustneededamoderatechangeratherthanadrasticrevolution.EastGermancitizens
didnotagree.
AsCommunismbegantofalterinPoland,Hungary,andCzechoslovakiain1988and1989,new
exoduspointswereopenedtoEastGermanswhowantedtofleetotheWest.Thensuddenly,

TheUnionofSovietSocialistRepublicswasformallydissolvedon26December1991by
declarationoftheSovietoftheRepublicsoftheSupremeSovietoftheSovietUnion.This

followingthecreationoftheCommonwealthofIndependentStates.Onthepreviousday,25
December1991,SovietPresidentMikhailGorbachevhadresigned,declaringhisofficeextinct,
