Please select a minimum of 2 math assignments and 2 word study assignments per week. Read 15 minutes daily either on
RAZ , with your child’s leveled books, or a traditional book. I remind the children to take home their book bags daily.
Please return the books daily, as we use the books for reading instruction. You are welcome to do more than is required.

Word Study
Pick 2 options per week unless your child needs additional practice. Some word patterns are more
difficult than others. A quick pre-quiz on Monday will help you gauge home much time you need to
dedicate to word study. You may repeat options each week. Complete in the homework spiral. I
recommend reading and sorting words daily- it just takes a few minutes. Do not forget to practice
the sight words! Some new options are below.
1.
Word Sort. Cut your words. Sort according to feature. (ex., long a, short a). Write your sort in the homework
spiral. Practice the sight words as well.
2. Speed Sort. Sort your words as fast as you can. Time yourself and see if you can beat your best time. Fun timers/
stopwatches at http://www.online-stopwatch.com/classroom-timers/
3. Practice Test. Have someone tell you a word from your list. Practice writing the word. Have an adult check
your work when done.
4. Picture Words. Draw a picture for each of your words. Label the picture with your word.
5. Ransom Words. Clip letters from magazines to spell your words. Glue down the ransom words in your homework
spiral.
6. Complete an activity on www.spellingcity.com . The site has some free options and some paid options. Please
monitor your child as he/she types in their list to ensure accuracy. There is also an app for this site.
7. Use your words to write a silly letter to a friend.
8. Use your words in questions or statements. Check for a capital letter in the beginning, space between each word,
and punctuation at the end.
9. Word Race. This activity takes some prep work on the adults’ part, but can be used all year. You will need about 50
plastic (disposable) cups and a black permanent marker. Write a letter on each cup so you have a full set of the
alphabet. Make additional cups for common letters and vowels. Have your child order the cups in ABC order.
(Stack additional letters). Call out a word. Have your child race to collect the cups, one at a time, to spell the word.
Put the cups back, and call out the next word.
10. Write each word 4 times using a marker, pencil, pen, and crayon.
11. Create a word search on http://www.abcya.com/second_grade_computers.htm (ABCya.com grade 2) and find your
words.
12. Create a Word Cloud with your words on http://www.abcya.com/word_clouds.htm (ABCya.com grade 2) or on
www.wordle.net . Word Clouds may also be hand drawn.
13. Telephone Words- translate your words to numbers using a telephone keypad (example- WORD=9673)
14. Pick 3 challenging words and create acrostic poems.
15. Type your words 5 times using different fonts.
16. Find the area and perimeter of your word study words (attached.)
