ProjectID 8 9 10 PEA-F18-W-2323 2017-2018Grant-BasedWildlifeProjects ProjectLead Collaringcariboutoimproveknowledge DistributionandAbundanceoftheFinlayCaribouHerd PopulationmonitoringofWoodlandCaribouis usedtodocumentandtrackchangesinthepopulationstatusofeachherdovertime.ForNorthern Caribou,obtainingaccuratecountsordetectingsmallchangesinthepopulationmaybemoredifficultif animalswinterinlowerelevationsbecausetheassociatedforestcoverintheseareasmakesspotting cariboumorechallengingfromtheair.Assessedin2002,littleisknownofthecurrentabundanceand distributionoftheFinlaycaribouherd.FLRNOisplanningtoconductapopulationassessmentfor caribouintheFinlayrange.Thisprojectsupportsthepurchaseanddeploymentof20GPScollarswhich willprovidedetailedinformationonthedistributionoftheherdandallowforasightabilitycorrection duringthepopulationcensus. Monitoringand Evaluation SpeciesofInterest ActionPlan Finlay PEA-F18-W-2346 TrackingcaribouherdboundariesinPeaceRegion RefinementofCaribouHerdBoundaries-FinlayHerd Northernecotypecaribouaresparselydistributed throughouttheFWCP'sPeaceRegion.TheFinlayherd,locatednorthoftheAkieRiver,iscurrently designatedas"specialconcern"byCOSEWIC,andhasdeclinedfrom~300animalsin1996to26 individualsin2002.Sincetheearly1990s,studieshavedocumentedthemovementsanddistributionof WildlifeInfometricsInc. $18,437 individualcaribouacrossallseasonalranges.Fromthesestudies,thereisevidenceofcariboumoving overtheheight-of-landtotheeast,intowhatiscurrentlydesignatedasthePinkMountainherd.Similar resultsinthePinkMountainherdhaveshownmovementbetweenthetwoherds.Thisprojectwilluse existingdatatorefinetheFinlayandPinkMountaincaribouherdboundariestoreflectmoreaccurate andbiologicallyrelevantboundaries. Species-based Actions SpeciesofInterest ActionPlan Peace PEA-F18-W-2345 Testingsilviculturetoimprovecaribouhabitat Testingapproachestorestorehabitatforcaribou Thisprojectwilltestthefeasibilityofusing silviculturalmethodstorestorelegacydisturbancefeatures(e.g.,roads,seismiclines,abandoned pipelines,andwellsites)thatexistwithinareasdesignatedforconservationofhabitatforcaribou(i.e., UWRsandWHAs).Silviculturethathasbeenusedelsewhereforsimilarrestorationprojectsinclude plantingappropriateconiferspecies,slashrollback,mounding,sight-lineblockages,fallingofadjacent treesacrossrightofways,blockingATVaccessandthespreadingofcoarsewoodydebris.Ifthe methodsarejudgedtobefeasible(i.e.,permitted,efficient,effective,non-conflicting,and/or protected)thenprotocolsforusecouldbeestablishedandthemethodsextrapolatedtoother designatedareasthroughouttheWillistonBasin.
