OurPeaceRegionBoardapproved$2.2millionfor26fishandwildlifeprojectstobeimplementedApril1,2017–March
31,2018.FirstNations,stewardshipgroups,consultants,andagenciesareleadingthe9fishand17wildlifeprojectsthat
willhelpconserveandenhancefishandwildlifeimpactedbyexistingBCHydrodams.
Caribou,bats,migratorybirds,moose,BullTrout,ArcticGrayling,andwetlandandriparianspeciesandotherswill
benefitfromthese26projects.Workwillcontinuethisyearaspartofourmulti-yearprojecttogatherdataonmercury
levelsinfishintheWillistonandDinosaurreservoirs.Wewillalsocontinueourmulti-yearprojecttoinvestigatelimiting
factorsaffectingmooseinthePeaceRegion,alongsidetheProvincialmoosestudy.
Aboutour2017–2018projectlist
Thisisafinallistofprojectsconditionally-approvedbytheFWCP’sPeaceRegionBoardasofApril1,2017.These
approvedbudgetsaretosupportthedeliveryoffishandwildlifeprojects,anddonotincludetheFWCPadministration
orcommunicationsbudget.Thetotalnumberofprojectsapprovedfor2017–2018includesbudgetsapprovedfor
futureworkthisfiscalyeartobefurtherdefinedbytheregionalBoards(i.e.,directedprojects).
Grant-basedfishandwildlifeprojectdescriptionsarebasedoninformationprovidedintheleadproponent'sgrant
application.
DirectedprojectsreflectregionalconservationprioritiesandhavebeenidentifiedbyourregionalBoardsfor
implementationthrougharequestforproposals.
Provincialfish&wildlifeprojects
Ourthreeregionalboards–Coastal,ColumbiaandPeace–approvedfundingfor102fishandwildlifeprojectsvaluedat
$9.4millionfor2017-2018.Eachprojectwentthroughathree-stagereviewandevaluationprocesspriortoafinal
decisionbyourlocalBoard.Eachprojectaddressesoneormoreconservationprioritiesinouractionplans.

Ecosystemimpact-nutrientenrichmentbyKokaneeinWilliston Reservoir Kokaneewereintroducedto
theWillistonregioninthe1990sandarepresentinlargepopulations.Thisprojectwillassesstheimpact
ofKokaneereturnsbymonitoringnutrientflow,aquaticinvertebratebiodiversityandfunctional
UniversityofNorthern

diversity,andlichendiversityinriparianareas.Duringthefirstyear,surveyswereconductedto
BritishColumbia
determineKokaneepresenceandabsence,andidentifyspecificsystems.Italsoallowedsamplingof
fish,aquaticinsects,andlichenstobeginsowecouldmonitornutrientflowanddevelopspecieslists–
inaregionsubstantiallyunsurveyedforbiodiversity–foruseinlaterresearch.Yeartwofundingwill
allowustocollectdatainthespecificsystemstocomparestreamswithandwithoutKokanee.
MonitoringBullTroutinWillistonReservoir
2017BullTroutSpawnerAbundanceandCriticalHabitats Since2001,FLNROandFWCPhaveconducted
annualBullTroutreddcountsinspawningtributariesofWillistonReservoir.McLeodLakeIndianBand
andTsayKehDeneFirstNationsaremorerecentpartners.Thisprojectwillcountreddsinthe
establishedannualindexreaches;inclusionoftwonewindexsectionsfromtheIngenikawatershedin
the2017surveytoprovideabaselineforfuturecomparison;andanapplicationoftheaerialreddcount
methodology(successfullyappliedtotheIngenikawatershedin2016)totheMesilinkaandOsilinka
watershedstoidentifycriticalspawninghabitatsandestimateBullTroutpopulationsize.Thisprojectis
designedtoaddressinformationgapsaboutBullTroutinthereservoirwhichwillleadtoafasterstartto
on-the-groundconservationandenhancementactions.

PreparingforwhitenosesyndromeinthePeaceRegion
WillistonReservoirBatEcologyProgram Batsareintegraltohealthyecosystems,yetlittleisknown
aboutbatpopulations,habitatrequirements,andthreatstobatspeciesaroundWillistonReservoirand
thePeaceRegion.AcrossNorthAmericabatsareexperiencingprecipitouspopulationdeclinesduetoa
devastatingdisease,WhitenoseSyndrome(WNS),warrantingtwobatspeciesinnorthernB.C.tobe
federallylistedasendangered.BecauseWNSstrikesinthewinter,killingbatswhiletheyhibernate,our
teamseekstoidentifyimportantbathabitatandestablishbaselinewinterbatdatatohelpmonitor
populationsandinformfutureplansfordealingwithWNS.Thestudywillhelpanswercriticalquestions
aboutbatecologyintheWillistonReservoir.

Collaringcariboutoimproveknowledge
DistributionandAbundanceoftheFinlayCaribouHerd PopulationmonitoringofWoodlandCaribouis
usedtodocumentandtrackchangesinthepopulationstatusofeachherdovertime.ForNorthern
Caribou,obtainingaccuratecountsordetectingsmallchangesinthepopulationmaybemoredifficultif
animalswinterinlowerelevationsbecausetheassociatedforestcoverintheseareasmakesspotting
cariboumorechallengingfromtheair.Assessedin2002,littleisknownofthecurrentabundanceand
distributionoftheFinlaycaribouherd.FLRNOisplanningtoconductapopulationassessmentfor
caribouintheFinlayrange.Thisprojectsupportsthepurchaseanddeploymentof20GPScollarswhich
willprovidedetailedinformationonthedistributionoftheherdandallowforasightabilitycorrection
duringthepopulationcensus.

StudyingcaribouinthePeaceRegion
PopulationAssessmentfortheWolverineCaribouHerd In2016-2017,theMinistryofForests,Lands,
andNaturalResourcesOperations,incollaborationwithTsayKehDeneNationandtheNak’azdliBand,
initiatedathree-yearpopulationassessmentoftheWolverineherdwithfundingsupportfromFWCP.A
totalof30GPSradiocollarsweredeployedonadultfemalecariboufollowedbyapopulationcensusin
February/March2016.Thecensuswasfollowedbycalfrecruitmentsurveysandmortalitysite
investigationswiththeobjectivetoidentifytheprimarylimitingfactorsofadultfemalecaribouand

EffectsofloggingandMountainPineBeetleoncaribouforagelichens Thisprojectbuildsonwork
conductedin2016-17toassesseffectsofMountainPineBeetles(MPB)andloggingonterrestrial
caribouforagelichens.In2017-18,thisprojectwillre-measurepreviouslyestablishedpermanentplots
attheJackfishCreeksiteontheWolverinecaribourangetoassesstheeffectsofMPB.Re-measuring

TrackingcaribouherdboundariesinPeaceRegion
RefinementofCaribouHerdBoundaries-FinlayHerd Northernecotypecaribouaresparselydistributed
throughouttheFWCP'sPeaceRegion.TheFinlayherd,locatednorthoftheAkieRiver,iscurrently
designatedas"specialconcern"byCOSEWIC,andhasdeclinedfrom~300animalsin1996to26
individualsin2002.Sincetheearly1990s,studieshavedocumentedthemovementsanddistributionof
WildlifeInfometricsInc. $18,437
individualcaribouacrossallseasonalranges.Fromthesestudies,thereisevidenceofcariboumoving
overtheheight-of-landtotheeast,intowhatiscurrentlydesignatedasthePinkMountainherd.Similar
resultsinthePinkMountainherdhaveshownmovementbetweenthetwoherds.Thisprojectwilluse
existingdatatorefinetheFinlayandPinkMountaincaribouherdboundariestoreflectmoreaccurate
andbiologicallyrelevantboundaries.
