Weathering Activity Name: __________________________ 2nd Grade PSI Physical and Chemical Weathering Materials (per pair of students): 2 antacid tablets 1 cup of water 1 toothpick Procedure: 1. Closely read passage on Weathering with partner. 2. Partner 1: Use toothpick to break up the tablet. Record observations on worksheet. 3. Partner 2: Place tablet in water. Record Observations on worksheet. 4. Pour the contents of you cup down a sink or into a disposal container. 5. Answer the conclusion questions on worksheet. www.njctl.org 2nd Grade PSI Changing of Earth Weathering and Erosion Weathering is the natural process where rock is dissolved or broken down into smaller pieces. Weathering can be chemical or mechanical. Chemical weathering dissolves rocks. This means the solid rock turns into a liquid. Water and acid rain often cause chemical weathering. Mechanical weathering breaks down big rocks into small pieces. Temperature, wind, and water often cause mechanical weathering. After the rocks have been dissolved and broken down, they can be moved to a new place. This movement of broken down rock is called erosion. www.njctl.org 2nd Grade PSI Changing of Earth Weathering and Erosion Worksheet Draw what the tablet looked like before Partner 1 used the toothpick. Draw what the tablet looked like after Partner 1 used the toothpick. Which type of weathering does this represent? Explain how you know. www.njctl.org 2nd Grade PSI Changing of Earth Draw what the tablet looked like before Partner 2 put it in the water. Draw what the tablet looked like after Partner 2 put it in the water. Which type of weathering does this represent? Explain how you know. When you poured the contents down the sink or into the basin, what did this represent? www.njctl.org 2nd Grade PSI Changing of Earth Questions 1. Weathering is a natural process. True or False 2.
