Weathering and Erosion
Weathering is the natural process where rock is
dissolved or broken down into smaller pieces.
Weathering can be chemical or mechanical.
Chemical weathering dissolves rocks. This means
the solid rock turns into a liquid. Water and acid rain
often cause chemical weathering.
Mechanical weathering breaks down big rocks into
small pieces. Temperature, wind, and water often
cause mechanical weathering.
After the rocks have been dissolved and broken
down, they can be moved to a new place. This
movement of broken down rock is called erosion.
