again, but those who drink of the water that I will
give them will never be thirsty.” “Sir, give me this
water, so that I may never be thirsty...” “Out of the
believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.”

e can’t do without it, because we are mostly
“it.” We don’t think much about it, unless
we are in a place where there isn’t any.
Then it is all we can think about. What is it?
Water.
When it is plentiful, we tend to take water for granted. We linger in the shower, hose down a dusty driveway, and let our sprinklers spurt for hours on the
lawn. We allow a dripping faucet to drip, flush away a single tissue, and dump
the melted contents of an ice cooler down the drain rather than walking ten
feet and dumping them onto our flowers or into the dog dish.
Jesus the Teacher
In the desert land where Jesus grew up, water was a precious commodity. People had to work hard and dig deep to find it. If the place they were digging
didn’t have water, they were forced to start all over in another wishful spot.
Once a well was dug, the work wasn’t over. They had to lower buckets up and
down, up and down, to pull the life-giving liquid out and fill larger jars. Often
a decent well was miles from home. Women and girls would spend a good
chunk of each day walking back and forth from well to home on a hot, dusty
road with heavy jars on their heads. They would fill the jars, walk home, empty
the jars. Then they would turn around and do it again. And again. And again.
Sound like fun?
Of all the things people called Jesus in his day, Good Teacher (Rabbouni) was
probably the most common. He spent much of his ministry teaching about the
kingdom of God, love, righteousness, and how we can know and grow in God’s

Rabbi Jesus
Some of the things Jesus taught are clear enough for a child to understand: Love
one another. Forgive one another. Share with those in need. Put away your weapons.
Don’t hit back.
Some of the things Jesus taught are so complex, you could spend a lifetime trying to figure them out. Living water? What’s that all about? Never being thirsty
again? How is that possible? The Teacher wasn’t talking about simple physical
thirst and H2O here. He was talking about filling the thirsty soul with the Word,

the wisdom, the peace and the power of the Holy Spirit of God.
Do you have thirsts you can never seem to fill? Jesus offers living water. Do you
have questions that never seem to get answers? Why not go to the source of all
wisdom? (No, not Dr. Phil, Oprah or Google.) Jesus taught his friends to ask,
seek, and knock. The ultimate authority is the author of all life. If you ask, God
will answer. If you seek, you will find. If you knock, the doors will be opened.
That’s a promise! So take the risk. Ask the Teacher. Don’t go home with an

Next Up: The Miracles of Jesus
Bible Time
Read and highlight John 4:13-14a, 15a, 7:38b, writing “Living Water” in the
margin of your Bible.
Role Play
1. A friend says, “Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha—they are all the same. It doesn’t
matter what you believe, as long as you are sincere.” Respond.
2. You are in a desert near a broken-down truck. The people around you are
parched. Some are fainting. You pull bottles of fresh, clean water out of your
backpack and offer them drinks. Some don’t believe you have water, even when
they see it. “It’s a mirage!” Some don’t want any of your water. “I’d rather have
coffee!” Some make excuses. “I’ll get serious about drinking water when I am
old.” Some have punctured the truck’s gas tank and are about to drink that. “It’s
all the same! It’s clear liquid!” Some have other excuses. Respond. (Have fun
with this, then relate it to Christ’s living water. Perform this skit in worship!)
Questions to Ponder
1. Who was the best teacher you ever had? What made them such a good
teacher? Do they know how much you appreciate them?
2. List three people who know you really well. How did they get to know you?
Based on your answer, how can you get to know God better?
3. The Samaritan woman was trying to quench her thirst with sex. What are
some other ways people your age try to fill their thirst?
