The Nullification act was supported by those who felt (mostly the
South) the government had unfairly passed a law. The nullification act
allowed states to veto federal laws. The north appreciated the tariffs
because they took away european competition and South disliked the
Higher tariffs because it made products more expensive. Calhoun
supported it, he was from South Carolina

They disagreed about where the border of Texas should be and when
President Polk sent troops down to the Rio Grande to claim the border,
Mexico attacked them and this gave Polk the excuse to declare war on
Mexico for "[invading] our territory and [shedding] American blood upon
the American soil."

Reformers
a. Describe the purpose of the Seneca Falls Convention. Name the
important historical figures involved in the convention.
It was a huge event for women’s rights and declared women and
men to be equal and wanted the right to vote. Elizabeth Cady
Stanton and Lucretia Mott were important figures in the
convention. Created the Declaration of Sentiments which states all
men and women are created equal.
b. What was the purpose of the Temperance Movement.
American’s blamed alcohol for many of the world’s problems and so
they wanted to ban or moderate the use of it.

i. William Lloyd Garrison
Abolitionism; he wrote the newspaper ​the Liberator and
called for no more slavery
ii. Frederick Douglas
Abolitionism; he edited an antislavery newspaper called the
North Star and he gave lectures and spoke out against slavery
as well as debating/discussing the issue with the president.
iii. Harriet Beecher Stowe
Abolitionism: She wrote uncle Tom’s Cabin to prove the
wrong that slavery was doing, President Lincoln Called her the
little old lady that started the war.

Education; he helped create the first Board of Education, have
teachers trained, worked to get children educated and to
better schools
