Biomes Poster: Chaparral

Other Abiotic Factors
Flat plains, rocky hills, mountain slopes, poor soils, frequent
forest fires, and a low elevations with those small hills.
Typical Plant Varieties and Adaptions
In chaparral, most plants are four to twelve foot evergreen
woody shrubs or dwarf trees. Some plants are leather oak,
blue oak, yucca wipple, and other shrubs. These plants need to
be well adapted to varying temperatures, poor soil, and lack of
moisture. One way the plants are adapted to this biome is that
the plants have small, hard leaves which hold moisture due to
the lack of rain. Many plants, including leather oak, are also
hairy so the leaves can collect
moisture. Also, plants, including blue
oak, have waxy coatings and thicker
cell layers so they can conserve water.
Some plants have adapted to the
frequent fires because the way the
reproduce is when a fire breaks out which sends seeds to
scatter.
Wildfires
Due to the hot dry summers and mild winters, the chaparral is
vulnerable to fires. However, plants and animals are adapted
to this.
Typical Animal
Varieties and
Adaptions
Almeria, Spain
-Almeria, Spain located in chaparral
biome
-In summer little precipitation and in
the winter there is slightly more
-but every month always less than two
inches of precipitation
-temperatures range from the 50s to the
80s
Albany, Australia
-Albany, Australia located in chaparral
biome
-less precipitation in the summer and
more in the winter
1 five inches of
-every month less than
precipitation
-temperatures range from the 50s to the
70s
Due to the chaparral climate, the
diversity of animals is low compared
to other forest biomes. The typical
animals are grassland and desert type
of animals who adapt
well to warm, dry
weather. Some of these
animals are coyotes,
jack rabbits, mule deer,
alligator lizards,
praying mantis and honeybees. One
example of how they adapt is the
black-tailed jackrabbit has long ears
which increases or decreases the
blood flow which can either cool
down or heat up
the animal.
Another example
is the Joachim Kit
Fox has pads on their paws which
give them a better traction on the
sandy soil of chaparral.

Where on Earth Found
The chaparral biome is found is found in small bits of continents. Some places are the west coast of the
United States, the coast of Chile, the southern tip of Africa, the western area of Australia and the coastal
areas of the Mediterranean Sea. This biome is characterized as being hot and dry.
• The word “chaparral” derives from the the the spanish work chaparral which means thicket of
shrubby evergreen oaks or a low-growing vegetation.
• Chaparral is the world’s smallest biome
